Synopsis: Crimson Tide (1995)
Synopis: When Russian rebels gain control of nuclear weapons in the USSR, the United States retaliates by deploying the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine commanded by Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman). Veteran soldier and Naval legend Ramsey selects Lt. Commander Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington)--a Harvard graduate who prefers using brains over weapons--as his Executive Officer. While submerged, the Alabama is attacked by a Russian sub and loses radio contact just as an order is being transmitted from headquarters. Old Navy dog Ramsey firmly believes that the interrupted transmission ends with an order to fire their nuclear missiles at the Russian rebels. Hunter, desperate to avoid starting World War III, is determined to re-establish radio contact and act only after complete orders are received. Without the second-in-command's agreement, the missiles cannot be launched, and soon Ramsey and Hunter are engaged in a tense battle of wills, forcing the crew to choose sides. In the tradition of TOP GUN and TRUE ROMANCE, director Tony Scott keeps the tension running high in this fast-paced military thriller. Hackman scores as the tradition-bound Ramsey, and Washington is superb as the thoughtful young officer who feels compelled to take a stand against his superior.Features: Crimson Tide (1995)

plot: Rogue rebels in Russia gain control of nuclear weapons, the U.S. military counters by deploying the historic USS Alabama, which is commanded by captain Ramsey (Hackman). Ramsey decides on liet. commander Hunter to help him as executive officer of the sub, Hunter is a seasoned thinker that uses his head over weapons. The Russian rebels pose a possible threat of WWIII to the U.S. and the rest of the world, when the American sub loses communication a feud rages on between the captain and ex-o.
review: The intense thriller Crimson Tide is one of director Tony Scott's most heartpounding allaround films. In this submarine flick Washington and Hackman square off against one another in order to decide who gets control of the nuclear vessel, Hackman is the aggressive captain but Washington follows the book and is very assertive. A sub with nuclear capability is an ultimate weapon in war, but mistakes cannot be taken back. Hackman portrays Ramsey as a veteran Navy captain and legend that believes the Russian rebels only intend to start WWIII. Washington plays liet. commander (ex. officer of the ship) Hunter who wants to make sure it truley is rebels before launching missiles. The rest of the cast is pretty much generic but they all give good, solid performances throughout the movie. The setting gets kind of dull because it takes place in a sub for the majority of the flick, but atleast its a realistic atmosphere. Scott delivers directing perfection with some excellent shots, Zimmer's musical score really stands out though and provides great tension during certain sequences. An overall lack of plot holds this movie down in the end from being spectacular imo. I can't say this is one of the best overall thrillers ever but it is quite good and entertaining imo, Crimson Tide is definitely a must-see sub film nevertheless.
