CCR - Creedence Clearwater Revival (1968)

Pros: 'Bluesey Swampy' rock playing at full force....

    Cons: Nothing really....

CCR's debut in 1968....pretty much not like anything else at the time...some awesome blues covers and guitar playing/singing by John Fogerty as well as the rest of the guys...this cd really rocks and is "different".... The cover "...I Put a Spell on You" opens it up at full force and takes full advantage of the original track by 'Screaming' Jay Hawkins who done it originally...decent track..."The Working Man" is a tight little Fogerty penned tune...pretty sweet. "Suzie Q" is an extended 8 minute full force jam that really gels and never gets dull...best listened at this time limit and not the shortened 4 min one too. The Wilson Pickett cover "Ninety Nine and a Half (Wont do)"...is really cool...Fogerty pulls of some really great covers here from the blues era...sings it like he was born to. "Get Down Woman" penned by Fogerty again is another self infused blues track...pretty cool. "Porterville" is next...another Fogerty written ditty is one of the better original tunes...good catchy song with good hooks..."Gloomy"
; is more of a swaggy type song that sways here and there in a sexual type tone, pretty decent track but average nontheless...reminds me of 'Fever'..."W
alking on the Water" closes off the album with the usual Fogerty swampy swayness of future recordings to come...all in all good stuff. Summing it up...Pretty decent debut by the guys...good entry and very different for 1968...good things were to come too. RR

Pro Reviews: Creedence Clearwater Revival [Fantasy] (Remastered)

  • All Music Guide

Released in the summer of 1968 -- a year after the summer of love, but still in the thick of the Age of Aquarius - Creedence Clearwater Revival's self-titled debut album was gloriously out-of-step with the times, teeming with John Fogerty's Americana fascinations. While many of Fogerty's obsessions and CCR's signatures are in place -- weird blues ("I Put a Spell on You"), Stax RB (Wilson Pickett's "Ninety-Nine and a Half"), rockabilly ("Susie Q"), winding instrumental interplay, the swamp sound, and songs for "The Working Man" -- the band was still finding their way. Out of all their records (discounting Mardi Gras), this is the one that sounds the most like its era, thanks to the wordless vocal harmonies toward the end of "Susie Q," the backward guitars on "Gloomy," and the directionless, awkward jamming that concludes "Walking on the Water." Still, the band's sound is vibrant, with gutsy arrangements that borrow equally from Sun, Stax, and the swamp. Fogerty's songwriting is a little... tentative. Not for nothing were two of the three singles pulled from the album covers (Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q," Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You") -- he wasn't an accomplished tunesmith yet. Though "The Working Man" isn't bad, the true exception is that third single, "Porterville," an exceptional song with great hooks, an underlying sense of menace, and the first inkling of the working-class rage that fueled such landmarks as "Fortunate Son." It's the song that points the way to the breakthrough of Bayou Country, but the rest of the album shouldn't be dismissed, because judged simply against the rock roll of its time, it rises above its peers. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Creedence Clearwater Revival

At a time when rock was evolving further and further away from the forces that had made the music possible in the first place, Creedence Clearwater Revival brought things back to their roots with their concise synthesis of rockabilly, swamp pop, RB, and country. Though CCR was very much a group in their tight, punchy arrangements, their vision was very much singer, song... Read more
