Pro Reviews: Crazy for You

  • All Music Guide

In the early 1990s, pianist John Hicks participated in many records as a leader for several labels. This trio outing with bassist Wilbert Bascomb, Jr. and drummer Kenny Washington is less substantial than most. Hicks sounds fine on eight Gershwin numbers (including, for no reason at all, two versions apiece of "K-R-A-Z-Y for You" and "I Got Rhythm") that were recorded to tie in with the successful Broadway show Crazy for You, but nothing all that surprising or purposeful occurs that justifies yet another recording of these warhorse tunes.
