For awhile Courtney Pine appeared as if he was going to be the next Wynton Marsalis. While Marsalis in the mid-'80s was doing close impressions of mid-'60s Miles Davis, Pine's impressive playing was nearly identical to John Coltrane's of the same era. Since then, Pine has received less publicity (at least in the U.S.) and his importance has diminished a bit.
