Pro Reviews: Cool Step

  • All Music Guide

Cool Steps is an album well worthy of one of Brazil's most celebrated drum'n'bass artists. Working with the material of a long row of impressive artists, both Brazilian and international, DJ Patife makes this CD a true pleasure to listen to. It is all drum'n'bass of course, but the moods and characters of the various tracks vary greatly with the different "guest artists". There are two tracks included by Fernanda Porto, the frenetic "Sambassim" (a big hit in Brazil) and the cooler and melodically more laid back "Só tinha que ser com você" which, in the hands of DJ Patife becomes much more dance floor friendly. Another song that really breathes Brazil is "Esfera", by Technozoide. The English drum'n'bass artist John B. contributes with the fine "The Way I Feel" while another praised Englishman, Cleveland Watkiss gets the album off to a hot Latin start with "Torch of Freedom". "Supergrass", by Carlito and Addiction, is pure party mood.
