Of all the movies I've seen in my lifetime I would have to say that Cool Hand Luke ranks right up there at the top of my list. Cool Hand Luke stars Paul Newman, in what I consider to be his greatest performance, as a war veteran, who just can't seem... to find anything to do so he decides to throw back a few beers and cut the heads off of a couple of parking meters. The police come and take Luke away and he is sentenced to 2 years on a chain gang. What follows several attempts by Luke to break free from this new society in prison that restrains him. I think that what makes this film so great is the desire of it's tragic main character to defy the odds, even when the odds are against him, and he knows that if he fails he will be punished, but that doesn't seem to bother him. He would much rather spend several days in the box than have to admit that someone has beaten him. The real tragedy of the story however is that no matter how hard he tries he still cannot overcome the world around him which is really all that he wants. Look for Dennis Hopper with a small role as one of Luke's fellow chain ganger. Read more Less
