Two Stars For Effort
, November 11, 2001Reviewer: pinkwrld - See all pinkwrld's reviewsWhat has Nick got himself into or what has he changed into. "The Convincer" Well don't let anyone convince you into buying this cd. The songs are all droaned out by Nick, theres no energy in any of the songs, its like my wife left me, my dog dyed, and all I do now is sit around drink beer and pity myself. I am being truthfull to the core here. I purchased the cd as I am a true Nick Lowe fan for all the years. I am so disappointed that he could not release something with more upbeat songs then sloppy songs that make you want to get a beer, and stop all thoughts of the outside world. Sorry Nick, two stars for production quality and one good song. ...

Pro Reviews: Convincer
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The Convincer is the last installment in a trilogy begun with The Impossible Bird and musically it falls between that record's country-rock and the torch songs of 1997's Dig My Mood. No surprises then, but that's fine, because Lowe hasn't delivered three records this consistent in a very long time, if ever. All three records are warm, intimate affairs, yet they all have a different mood. Bird was a quintessential breakup record, Mood was the soundtrack to a late-night seduction, while The Convincer is a laid-back record that simply feels good. It's a smooth affair, whether Lowe is crooning a cover of Johnny Rivers' "Poor Side of Town" or "Homewrecker," where it's clear that he still loves the title seductress, even if she turned his life upside down. And that's the key to the record -- there's a real sense of joy from Lowe, a sense that he knows he's been in a creative renaissance and that he's enjoying every second of it, and that spills over to the record itself. It's a record comprised of little triumphs -- the relaxed rockabilly of "Has She Got a Friend?," the telling details of "Lately I've Let Things Slide," and the wry ballad "I'm a Mess." At the end of the record, when he's convincing his sweetheart "Let's Stay in and Make Love," the listener is as smitten as the object of his affection. That may not be earth-shaking, but it's thoroughly charming all the same. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Pros: Brilliant songwriting
Cons: Shame it wasnt a double album
This album was recommended to me by a friend. I bought it not having heard anything from it but had seen the excellent reviews. The first time I played it, I thought I was the victim of an elaborate joke. I thought it sounded like a pub singer (which was how Lowe started out) with a backing band straight from the local workingman's club. I hated it. On the second play, I began to sing along and by the third play, I was totally hooked and haven't stopped playing it since. It is simply beautiful. Gorgeous ballads with great lyrics. No sweeping strings etc just very fine sympathetic musicians. The lyrics are a real treat with lots and lots of humour and pathos. The tunes become embedded in your soul and you will wake up in the morning singing "Indian Queens" or any of the other songs. You will never approach the laundry basket again without a wry smile and singing "I've Let Things Slide". Timeless and highly recommended. Quintessentially English but steeped in America. ...
