Pro Reviews: Complete Columbia Recordings, Vol. 1

  • All Music Guide

Boasting a charismatic voice that had an amazing emotional range, Mildred Bailey is one of the more underrated talents of the jazz era. On the Complete Columbia Recordings, Vol. 1, Bailey's incredible vocals are showcased on hundreds of songs, sequenced in chronological order from sessions done in 1938. A who's who of guest musicians accompany her, including Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Hoagy Carmichael, Eddie Lang, and Gene Krupa, among many others. Bailey shines; her range may not be the most impressive, but she more than makes up for it with her phrasing and intonation. Due to the sheer size of the set, this may be something for collectors and die-hard fans only, but to any adventurous listeners with a large pocketbook, this is a detailed and complete collection from a magical period in Bailey's career.
