Pros: scathing prediction of the ill effects capitalism

    Cons: dated

This is the historic tract supporting communism and denouncing capitalism and a class conscious society. Despite some glaring dated text such as child labor it reads like it could've been written yesterday. Every denouncement of the capitalistic... machine is relevant to right now. It is a call to workers to band together overthrow the upperclass to create a classless society using the now infamous words "Working men of all countries unite." A must-read. 7/10 Read more Less

So THAT'S how to start fixing the world!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 5, 2006

    Pros: Punchy, fun to read

Cons: Deceptively densely argued, takes several reads

Written by two young men who saw how to change the world. It's in-your-face. The opening gambit is a taunt: 'A spectre is haunting Europe -- the spectre of communism.' Fighters flaunting their confidence. Great vivid images which ring all... the truer today -- capitalism is like a sorcerer who has conjured up immense forces beyond his control, they say. But, ridiculously, forces of too-much wealth, too-much food, over-abundance in the face of starvation and devastation. Sound like today's world? They explain why this happens and how to end the paradox. The Manifesto answers the debates and rulers' propaganda of the time (and ours, too). Are communists godless heathens? Do they abandon morals and use women? Are rebels just lazy good-for-nothings? I like the Pathfinder edition because it's cheap, has an introduction by a leader of the Russian revolution (Leon Trotsky) which brings it up-to-date for our epoch of colonialism and international wars, and has lots of margin space in which to write notes. Publisher Notes: The Communist Manifesto

  • One of the most profoundly defining documents ever published in history. "The Communist Manifesto" has forever realigned political faultlines worldwide, and its aftershock resonates to this day. In the 150 years since its publication, no other treatise has inspired such a dividing and violent debate, and after the recent collapse of several regimes which had initially embraced it, a retrospective interpretation of the essential ideas it advocates is presented in this comprehensive volume. This edition of Karl Marx's philosophy is the authorized English translation of 1888, edited and annotated by Friedrich Engels, and includes prefaces to the several editions published between 1872 and 1888.
