Come Pick Me Up is Perfect Pop

    By Brian  Oct 9, 2000

With a lively spirit and a sort of jangly musical optimism not readily apparent in their previous, punkier albums, Superchunk let loose this virtual celebration of pop. Every song is miniature masterwork, each with their own discernable and memorabl...e hook. It's impressive, enjoyable, smiling stuff. Who can't sing along to "1,000 Pounds" or "Pink Clouds" every single time? It's a perfect fusion of punk and pop. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

Actually, here's where the strings come in -- Come Pick Me Up is Superchunk's finest effort in years, a bright, infectious pop record that rejuvenates the group's trademark sound through the addition of producer Jim O'Rourke's candy-colored orchestral flourishes without losing sight of the music's punk roots. Tracks like "Hello Hawk," "1000 Pounds," and "Pink Clouds" achieve a perfect balance between Superchunk's patented brand of hyperkinetic indie rock and O'Rourke's avant-pop aesthetic, drawing upon the talents of Chicago underground notables including saxophonist Ken Vandermark, trombonist Jeb Bishop, and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm to bring galvanizing new dimensions to Mac McGaughan's memorably melodic songs. A stunning and unexpected return to form.

Biography

Superchunk

Perhaps no band was more emblematic of the true spirit of American indie rock during the 1990s than Superchunk, the pride of Chapel Hill, NC. Following the D.I.Y. ethic to the letter, the group operated solely by their own rules, ignoring all passing trends by sticking to their trademark sound -- typified by the buzzing guitars and high, impassioned vocals of frontman M... Read more
