Pro Reviews: Colour Me Pop: The Small Faces/The Move [DVD]

  • All Music Guide

This probably unauthorized DVD is divided into two segments taken from late'60s broadcasts on the British TV program Colour Me Pop, one devoted to the Small Faces, the other to the Move. It was a good idea as there's probably substantial overlap between Small Faces and Move fans, but the Small Faces portion is a big letdown. Not so much of because of the content, which is fairly intriguing. It shows the band playing much of their Ogden's Nut Gone Flake album live on Colour Me Pop in June 1968 (the promo film they did for the "Lazy Sunday" single is also shown), complete with narration by Stan Unwin. The problem is that the quality is subpar, not just for a regular release, but even (by early twentyfirst century standards, anyway) a bootleg. The image is shaky and blurry enough to suggest that it's been copied several generations down from the original broadcast tape, and the sound is afflicted by a lot of distortion and buzzing. It's most unfortunate, as it's most likely the closest th...e band got to capturing a visual representation of the rather obscure Ogden's Not Gone Flake concept. One can only hope that, if the original film still does exist, eventually a better and more easily obtainable DVD transfer of the broadcast can be produced. Luckily, it's not a waste of time if you find the Small Faces footage hard to watch, for the Move part of the program is of considerably better (though hardly official release) quality, showing the band playing ten songs well live around early 1969. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less

The Small Faces

The Small Faces were the best English band never to hit it big in America. On this side of the Atlantic, all anybody remembers them only for is their sole stateside hit, "Itchycoo Park" -- but in England, The Small Faces were one of the most extraordinary and successful bands of the mid-'60s; their music remains some of the most valuable and enjoyable of the era.Lead si... Read more
