The Rating System 1-Poor through 5-Excellent.Song1.Welcome to the Colored Section (0/5)-This intro introduces us to the theme of the album but the title says it all. This intro really wasnt necessary.2. Beautiful Me(4.5/5)-Song grows on you quickly. ...The interest in the lyrics makes the song intense.3. Cloud(4.5/5)-Catchy. Hook and sinker song. Song sparks further exploration into the album. Excellent song arrangement. An uplifting son in tone and lyrics.4. People Person(4.5/5)-So who are we to give up on anyone.... great lyric. Funky song. Great story telling.5. Big Black Buck(3/5)-I couldnt tell really were he was going with this one. The music reminded me of carnival music. It contributes to the theme of the album, but thats about it.6. Wildlife(3/5)-An attempt at classic groove.7. Do you know?(3/5)-Uptempo. Too tropical though. Think Coppa Cabana...Lyrics a bit pungent in the begining. Donnies seasoned adlib exercised in Cloud is used in this song. His adlib is enough to get you through this one.8. Turn Around(3.5/5)-The album is progressing from its slump in this one. The song itself is still carnavalish. Song redeems itself when the tempo changes.9. You Got a Friend (4.0/5)-Donnie shows us his vocal control and skills. His voice blends well with the piano lead. Symbols are a bit too strong.10. Heaven Sent(4.0/5)-Uptempo. Catchy la..la..la...An interesting, sexy, flute mix in the song made me interested.11. Rocket Ship(3/5)-Musically not challenging. He stretches his vocals a bit, a good thing, to diversify the album.12. Masterplan(3.0/5) Too much goin on in one song. Interesting song if you are interested in abstract music sampling.13. Our New National Anthem(4.5/5)-Donnie keeps the album afloat with this one. Strong on strings. Melody great. Lyrically inspirational.14. The Colored Section(4.5/5)-Good piano lead. I could see the credits rolling on this one. Excellent choice to close the album. Great vocal harmony.Overall the album, to me, gets a 3.75 out of five. It is lyrically expressive. There are no usual R&B gloss, pandering to the ladies, ghetto sympathizing songs on this album. It is clear conscious music. It suffers slightly from fillers, which unfortunately compose almost half of the album. Not to be overlooked, the album has quiet a few jems that will add to the diversity of your CD collection. The infusion of Stevie Wonder and Donny

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 8, 2004

Pros: Truly a positive vibe that reaches out to everyone...

Cons: I heard none (and trust me I listen to this album at least 2x a day)

This album encompasses the true essence of soul and R&B music. Donnie has the sultry voice that I compare to Donny Hathaway and the music that reflects influences of Stevie Wonder. He is such an underrated artist, but he is one of a kind in this day ...and time. From the beginning to the end we are "Welcomed to the Colored Section" as well as taken on the journey and phlight of the black experience. The music throws us constant curve balls, one minute it seems as though we are going to an old Baptist Church, then we stop by the circus and finally we taken on the contemporary R&B and soul journey. Infusions of jazz as well as R&B and soul define and complement Donnie's deep lyrical content and thought. This is what music should really be about, and Donnie speaks, sings, and plays from his heart as well as his soul. What a voice... What wonderful music!!! Read more Less

Pros: great singer and song writter

    Cons: segmented target market

This is a great cd. His songs are so powerful and full of soul. He was also very innovative in the writing the songs on the cd. The songs put you in touch with real life situations and that's what true music is all about. Hopefully he'll... get the mainstream attention to thrive on a national level. Read more Less

The Best Soul Project of the Year

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 15, 2002

Really, what more can you expect for a talented ATL brotha such as Mr. Donnie Johnson.....This cat is awesome, a refreshing throwback to when music was really music...Soothing and relevant vocals and lyrics...There are no standout cuts on this album ...(the whole damn thing is great!!)but I am really feeling the slow, inspirational title cut "Welcome to the Colored Section", the funked out "Our New National Anthem", the breezy and preachy "People Person" and the minstrel/side-show inspired "Big Black Buck"...Damn, I wish I had lived in ATL back during the time of the Yin-yang cafe....if you don't buy this project, trust me, you're making a mistake..Donnie, can't wait until album #2 bruh!!! Love and peace! Read more Less
