Pro Reviews: Collision Course/The Wheel

  • All Music Guide

This twofer from Acadia features a pair of out of print Asleep at the Wheel LPs, The Wheel and Collision Course, both originally issued on Capitol in 1977 and 1978. These albums highlight the band's mixture of originals and classic Western swing, jazz, and honky tonk material, not to mention the unique baritone vocals of Ray Benson. The cover versions alone are worth the price: Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump," Louis Jordan's "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," Nathan Abshire's Cajun shuffle "Pine Grove Blues," and Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927."
