They've dug themselves into a hole..

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 3, 2004

    Pros: passable vocals

Cons: bad material and an identity crisis

I'll make this an overall commentary on 98 Degrees and it's not too far left of the field since this album serves as a summary of what they've done with their career so far...What good can be said about them? They started out as a good ha...rmony quartet and on their first singles, they showed a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the good things stopped there. I borrowed their debut album from a friend and it was a mediocre effort. The material was bad and it showed none of the promise I was expecting. The same goes with their 2nd album and their sorry attempt to stretch their repertoire on Revelation. They started out aspiring to be the "white Boyz II Men". Ironically, they did just that. They're both known for their ballads and regrettably can't sing anything else. No one can accuse them for not trying, they've tried everything from latin and hiphop beats to liven things up but the output is just laughable. Both groups' material proved to be more & more generic and formulaic as time goes by, even the ballads don't hack it anymore. Their voices are nice but you don't feel a thing when you hear it. 98 Degrees tried to go pop (complete with dance moves) to get the boyband audience while Boyz II Men tried to get the 112/Jagged Edge crowd. Both failed and both looks to be nowhere near a solution. It's a sad end to a group who had the tools but didn't know how to use it and finally squandered it away. Read more Less

It's good! well, i'm a fan and I say it's just the type of good work from the 98 degrees, though that duet with nick and jessica is missing.

98° may have been typecast alongside the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC thanks to their dashing good looks, but their music set them apart from such highly polished pop. Constructing a style that's rooted in sultry RB and soul grooves, 98° established themselves as a strong vocal group and The Collection charts the band's musical maturation since their 1997 self-titled debut. From the heart-rending "Was It Something I Didn't Say?" and "I Do (Cherish You)" to the sexy Latin party of "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)," The Collection captures the highlights. A hidden treasure featured in Disney's Mulan, "True to Your Heart" is one of 98°'s finest moments. The collaboration with Stevie Wonder is a sophisticated match for the group and an equal favorite among fans. "Thank God I Found You" with Mariah Carey is also an added bonus. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson's dramatic duet on "Where You Are" is missing and that might disappoint some fans, but most will be able to overlook such a move. The... Collection is a solid package and loyalists who've followed them from the beginning will be pleased. - MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

98 Degrees

The sweet urban soul quartet 98 Degrees was formed in Los Angeles by four former Ohio residents: brothers Nick and Drew Lachey plus Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre. Timmons was trying to make it in the music industry, so he called Jeffre and Nick Lachey -- both former classmates at the Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Artists -- and formed 980; Drew Lachey s... Read more
