Coded Arms takes place in an abandoned virtual reality system and its portal site inside a giant computer network. The VR system was originally created as a combat training simulator in the event of an alien invasion. However, during the development of the simulation program, a major flaw was discovered and development was cancelled and left abandoned. During this time when the program was not monitored, it kept evolving within the computer network and eventually turned into a vast and brutal VR world populated with virtual alien invaders, dangerous computer bugs and the VR system's own security bots.

Players take the role of a computer hacker who infiltrates the abandoned virtual reality system. Gamers will use weapons and power-ups that they discover while exploring the expansive single player mode. Coded Arms will also utilize the PSP handheld system's wireless capabilities for multiplayer action for up to four people. To enhance the multiplayer experience, gamers can bring over their items they collect from the single player mode and use them in the multiplayer mode to defeat other players and enemies.

To battle deep into the heart of the unchecked system, players will fight through more than five different game worlds with multiple gameplay levels. Players will encounter three different types of enemies, including soldiers, bugs and bots. More than 30 different weapons will be available to battle the horde of virtual creatures, including real world weapons such as sniper rifles, machine guns and grenades, and more fantastic armaments such as pulse rifles.

    Coded Arms PlayStation Portable

Pros: A solid roster of weapon types; great graphics engine that runs smooth and loads quickly; three multiplayer types for up to four players.

Cons: Random level generation is pointless and dull; enemies aren't interesting or fun to kill; single- and multiplayer levels are drab and repetitive; controls take more getting used to than they ought to.

If there's one big question mark that Coded Arms manages to do away with, it's whether or not the PSP can do FPS controls. After all, the genre is at its best when played with a keyboard and mouse (and, to a lesser degree, two analog sticks),... so how would the PSP's controls handle a game of this type? As Coded Arms demonstrates, the PSP can most definitely do a controllable FPS, but it takes a bit of doing. For starters, Coded Arms' default control scheme is complete trash. It relegates your look movements to the four face buttons and assigns movement controls to the analog stick, effectively robbing you of any degree of proper aiming. Thankfully, there are three other control schemes, and you are openly invited to try out each scheme right at the beginning of the required tutorial level. We found the most usable one to be the scheme that might seem the most counterintuitive from the outset: the one that gave look controls to the analog stick and movement controls to the face buttons. It's basically a left-handed person's FPS scheme, and while righties might balk at it initially, they'll be able to adjust without too much duress. Also, the targeting reticle will magnetize itself to a nearby foe (provided they don't jump around too much), which seems to make up for any jitteriness that one might experience trying to get used to the aiming mechanics. It works to a degree, but it's more of a helpful guide than an automatic lock, so don't expect the game to just auto-lock to everything. Read more Less

Pros: a shooter done... right, portable, interesting story

Cons: repetetive levels, cliched weapons, few bosses

This game is the first FPS on the PSP, and proves they can be done, but it begs the question of "Should they be done?" The game has many proper elements and a story that belongs there, but the computer situation isn't good at best. The ...weapons are cliched (how many times have we fired a plasma rifle?), but necissary. The story, while intriguing, is oddly absent during much of the game play, and only enforced during the training level and between levels. One thing the sequel (if there is one) needs is a more enforced story and new weapons. It's so-so in my book. Read more Less
