This will be a lengthy review.About time Carly had a 3-CD box set of her greatest material. Many are great; few are poor. Let's start with 'Let The River Run.' That song, along with 'Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of' and 'Turn Of The Tide' sound much... too gospel-ly at the end. The background singers add little flavor to the songs. 'You Belong To Me' and 'We're So Close' don't have the best sax solos (David Sanborn did better on other Carly songs). 'Coming Around Again' moves me deeply (given Paul Samwell-Smith's magic touch), as well as the similar-sounding 'Itsy Bitsy Spider'. Other songs that perfectly stand out are 'Jesse', 'Haven't Got Time For The Pain', 'Legend In Your Own Time', 'All I Want Is You', 'Give Me All Night', 'The Right Thing To Do'. I felt what Carly was singing on 'Touched By The Sun', and Dirk Ziff's solo really added the atmosphere to the song, as well as collaboration from Marc Cohn and Ben Taylor.The miscellaneous disc had much great stuff too. 'Angel From Montgomery', which was also covered by Bonnie Raitt two years later, has background vocals from Carly's son, Ben. 'Raining', and 'I'm All It Takes To Make You Happy' are previously unreleased as well. 'My New Boyfriend' is perfect to dance to. 'Voulez-Vous Danser', from the now unavailable "Romulus Hunt...", has an awesome EWI solo from Michael Brecker (he uses that instrument so brillantly, indirectly, to make me cry). 'The Night Before Christmas' is important to have for a Christmas holiday. 'Why' is another dance song, which was on a soundtrack produced by Nile Rodgers (he makes songs sound REALLY great).The final disc mostly makes you "cry yourself to sleep", as the disc implies. 'It Happens Everyday' and 'Orpheus' are from the VERY hard to find, "Hello, Big Man". 'Never Been Gone', as I stated on the review of "Spy", is a very important gem to include on any Carly collection, just because its magical and free-flowing. 'Happy Birthday' I considered appropriate for people who are aging (and believe me, we ALL are). 'Dink's Blues', 'Play With Me', and 'My Luv Is Like A Red, Red Rose' were songs before Carly's first record was out, when she was with the Simon sisters. Each song is only Carly and her acoustic guitar. 'What Shall We Do With The Child?', 'I've Got A Crush On You', 'You're The Love Of My Life', and 'I Get Along Without You Very Well' are fine for ending this disc because of its jazz/contemporary textures drawing you in. Carly brings great joy when I listen to her music, I've become quite obsessed to hear more and more.Okay, now that I've REALLY reviewed this as best as possible, BUY THIS BOX SET!!! :) It's worth $50.JoshCarson City, NV Read more Less
