James B - See all James B's reviews 1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Close to the Edge (Remastered) review helpful Rounding out the "holy Trinity" of Must Own Yes albums is the ambitious Close To The Edge. The only way I can describe the breathtaking title track is that it's a "sound painting."! This is progressive rock at its absolute best. The listener will be treated to the sounds of streams, birds, swirling pipe organs, deep basses, quiet passages & soaring vocals. Although Anderson's lyrics are sometimes vague, it really doesn't matter! Just sit back & allow yourself an almost 19 minute...."trip"! One of the last 2 tracks is a live favorite. "And You & I". (which is sometimes on rock radio) This is a highly romantic song & it's not afraid to say so in the biggest, grandest way! Closing out the album is a track I *used* to skip over. (like a fool!) "Siberian Khatru". This is a great example of Jon's cryptic lyrics, yet they still somehow work. He once said, his lyrics don't necessarily have to rhyme all the time, just as long as the words fit the imagery & feel of the song. Listen out for Steve on the electric sitar! I would *highly* recommend you listen to this album at night w/ headphones! :) (One of "those" albums!) ... -

Pro Reviews: Close to the Edge (Remastered)
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews For most fans, this album represents the peak of Yes' work. Side-length suites allowed Jon Anderson even more opportunity for vocal acrobatics and Rick Wakeman an even bigger canvas on which to paint his electronic synthesizer swirls, organ arpeggios, and great swathes of Mellotron-generated color. Steve Howe's playing took on a particularly urgent quality here, but never lost sight of its lyricism, while Chris Squire's bass is practically another lead instrument, and Bill Bruford -- in his then seeming swan song with the band -- contributed some of his most elegant drumming. The 1995 remastering, referred to on the top back of the jewel box, was especially welcome on this album, the new CD version being many steps superior to the old one in terms of sound. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |
