Pro Reviews: Clean Sweep

  • All Music Guide

Bobby Broom's debut introduces a guitarist out of timewhile his funky, singlenote style owes much to Grant Green's Blue Note LPs of the previous decade and effectively anticipates the acid jazz sensibilities of the decade to follow, Clean Sweep squeezes him into the GRP label's early1980s house style, bulldozing his lithe playing with gelatinous fusioninspired production that's dated badly. To his credit Broom curtails GRP's signature slapbass rhythms and thick synth textures in favor of a more straightahead jazz approach that better spotlights his estimable talents, but songs like "No Bad Vibes" and "Share My Love" still collapse under the weight of their toosmooth overproduction.
