Claudine (Diahann Carroll) is a single mother raising six children in the projects of Harlem. What little money she earns comes directly from a rich family for whom she keeps house. Struggling to make ends meet, she resorts to welfare. Claudine works to keep her dignity in the face of the humiliating hoops the welfare system--a system created precisely for women like her--forces her to jump through. She finds grace and romance in a pleasant garbage collector (James Earl Jones). Falling in love, the two work together to fight societal hypocrisy and to keep Claudine's family unit afloat.

Released in 1974 during blaxploitation's prime, CLAUDINE offered a more humanistic view of the black American experience. The independent feature showed African-Americans in a light they would not regularly be seen in for at least another decade. In addition to its warm depiction of ghetto romance, the film is also remembered for the soundtrack featuring Curtis Mayfield and Gladys Knight and the Pips. Diahann Carroll earned an Oscar nomination for her lead performance.

Pros: TERRIFIC ACTING FROM ALL PRINCIPALS

    Cons: NONE

THIS MOVIE IS MY FAVORITE OLD SCHOOL. IT SHOWS THAT OLDER PEOPLE, CAN STILL FIND LOVE. SHE HAD SIX CHILDREN, ON WELFARE, DIDN'T REALLY LOOK LIKE A GOOD PROSPECT. BUT, ROOP SAW ALL THRU THAT, BUT OF COURSE HE HAD TO FIND HIMSELF BEFORE HE REALI...ZED CLAUDINE WAS THE ONE FOR HIM. THE SOUNDTRACK BY GLAYDYS KNIGHT IS FIRST RATE. THE ACTING WONDERFUL. THIS ONE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Read more Less

I had the plesure of see this movie on the big screen as a child ( which does date me) and I have looked for this movie to be released for 19 years. I am delighted that the hands of 20th Century Fox have been untied and the world can now see a good B... Black film that has no violence, no crime (at least no felonies) and yet acuratley portray a struggling family of Harlem. My 23 year old daughter loves it and my 12 year old son, and you will love it. It is a must see! Read more Less
