Claude Luter will always be best known for his work in leading the band that frequently accompanied Sidney Bechet during his Paris years, and for his own Bechetinspired playing. Although he had his first lessons on trumpet, Luter soon switched to clarinet. Early on Luter recorded with clarinetist Claude Abadie and trumpeter Boris Vian.. He began leading his own Dixielandoriented band in 1946, and from 194955, they often worked with Bechet. Luter recorded with Mezz Mezzrow (1951), Albert Nicholas (1953) and an essential set with Barney Bigard (1960). He led bands into the 1980s and in 1997 participated in a "Bechet Summit," teaming up with fellow clarinetist/soprano saxophonist Jacques Gauthe for an exciting GHB CD.
