Pro Reviews: City of New Orleans
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Steve Goodman was best known for "City of New Orleans," a song he wrote while on the campaign trail for Edmund Muskie that became a hit for Arlo Guthrie in 1972, and was later covered by numerous artists including Willie Nelson. "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" was a major hit on the country charts for David Allan Coe, who added a fourth verse to turn it into one of the most requested songs at country music bars through the '70s and '80s. This album features both of those notable songs, as well as an excellent representation of one of America's finest songwriters. Good friend John Prine also recorded "Donald and Lydia," and Goodman turned in a wonderful cover of Hank Williams' "Mind Your Own Business." Before his death in 1984, Goodman churned out a catalog of songs that would keep his name in the history books forever; many of those songs are featured on this record. - Michael B.
