    "City of God" a must see!!!

    Pros: an intense view of life in a third world environment

    Cons: spoken in a foreign language and need to watch it with english subtitles

    "City of God" in my mind is a must me, must have movie. It depicts the life of a male named Rocket, who lives in a third world environment. He is exposed to violence and substance abuse early on in life as this movie follows his first 16 yr...s of his life. You meet interesting characters such as Benny(the playboy), Li'l Ze(drug-dealer), Carrot(drug-dealer), and many more. Granted there are a few graphic fighting scenes, but the more realistic the movie is the better in my mind it is. After watching this film i feel even more inspired to become a film director, and hope to oneday make a major motion picture like this one. Thank you for reading this. Read more Less

    Pros: Perfectly directed and produced

    Cons: are you kidding?

    It is a great movie all the way. It is pretty violent but so is life in Rio. In other words, if you don't want to see brutality on its best, go watch Shrek.The first sequence - the introduction to the story- is fabulous.The movie deserves the 4 O...scar nominations it got this year. The brazilian DVD is already available in Region 4 for those of you who can get passed those codes, or for those of you who have Region 4 DVD players... The title in portuguese is Cidade de Deus, and it has subtitles for English and French (maybe something else). For Portuguese speakers, the brazilian DVD is a better deal because it has many extras!     Saw this movie in Ireland in January, was completely in awe at how good it was. Then I saw it again in the US since then. This is the best movie I have ever seen with subtitles...I didn't lose track of what was going on once...One of the best s...tories ever..a must see. Read more Less

    Pros: Fantastic start and introduction to the story

    Saw this in Telluride in 2002 -- it was one of the best features in the festival. Saw it again when it played in town. It is such a fine telling of a story. I am SO glad to see that it will soon be available on DVD...
