Chocolat (1989)

I think it was a good movie, but I'm not sure

I was expecting this movie to have a clear plotline, problems, resolution, etc. But it didn't. I wasn't really sure what was going on, and two hours or so later, it ended, leaving me wondering whaddup. Having lived in West Africa myself at around ...the same age (7-9 years old, but in an ex-british colonial area (the gambia)), I found much of the sense of the movie familiar, yet still different enough for me to enjoy it. Despite not being clear *what* the movie was about (yeah sure: colonialsim, racism, bitterness, childhood, memories, propeller bearings, coffee, showers, sexual tensions, heirarchical ordering of people, etc), I still liked it, so I'm giving it 3 stars. I'd give it 3.5 or 3.75, but I'd rather round down than up. Oh yeah, and it's in french, so brush up on your conjugations, or just make sure you can read, watch, and think simultaneously.Apparently "chocolat" is also a french euphamism for "broke", as in, "the colonial system is broke (as in over, no money, not as in "broken")", which is kinda what this movie was about, though very subtley.
