Pro Reviews: Children
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews It is hard to remember that at one time goth rock was actually taken (sort of) seriously. When the Mission's Children came out in 1988, the English goth movement was immense. While American audiences were force-fed the gleaming production and banal lyrics of hair metal, Brits were dealing with gleaming production and pastoral lyrics worshipped by kids dressed in black. Critics lambasted goth, calling it pompous, derivative, and lacking in imagination. Critics don't buy records, however (they get them for free), and the public made it a movement. the Mission's Children was perfectly timed, spent time at the upper reaches of the U.K. charts, and was the band's first, albeit cultish, success in the U.S. Children is the Mission's big statement. Besides the fact that it was a prolific seller, Children was a well-done and accessible album -- at times. Songs like the single "Heaven on Earth" are lush, shimmering affairs that are almost dreamlike in their delivery, while tracks like "Black Mountain Mist" and "Breathe" are short interludes that are reminiscent of Led Zeppelin. Of course, that may be all due to the fact that Led Zeppelin bassist and arranger John Paul Jones produced and played on the album. Musically, the Mission were at their best and most dramatic on Children. But there are moments that firmly place this album in the cement of goth in 1988, and there's no way out. The goth movement could at times be silly and overblown, but it produced some strong music, and the Mission's Children is a perfect example that sometimes you shouldn't read too much into everything. - Chris True, All Music Guide |
