Chicago Is All Together This Time!

    By Andre  Apr 14, 2006

Pros: Hook Filled Songs With A Very Heavy Horns

    Cons: Cons?I Thinkee Not

The title of this isn't misleading-this is Chicago's second album.Actually it's their first in a way-their first release was credited to Chicago Transit Authority-this one only Chicago. And there is a very sudtle difference yes. While '...CTA' favored big, dynamic and almost abscract psychedelic musicianship and harder rock overtones.'Chicago II' puts songcraft and hooks at a higher premium. And this is fille with plenty of them,a lot of which were very big hits for them-"Movin' On","Poem For The People","Wake Up Sunshine","Make Me Smile","Colour My World" and "25 Or 6 To 4"-the latter of the two were part of the second half of the album entiled "Suite For A Girl In Buchannon" which contains a good bakers dozen one minute cuts that flow together into sort of a cinerama styled orchestral quasi film score-a long piece.Horns and reeds are used in jazzy styles all over the place during these tunes. The vocals weave in and out similarly. As before Chicago enjoyed crafting great pop hits but also left plenty of place for experimentation on the album cuts, especially on these earlier recordings. This album is not psychedelic as the debut was and is rooted far more in pop/rock,R&B and some classic styles but it is no less well done or performed.Surely one of Chicago's very best beginning to end triumphs! At times very good!

    By jrucker1  Dec 15, 2004

    Pros: musicianship

    Cons: compositions

Chicago from this era cracks me up. These guys had the undeniable musical chops, but their lyrics many times come across as something that would pass for sophomore English class. Additionally, the four songs from the first lp side sound like failed... soundtracks for seventies documentary films. Imagine some of the songs backing up one of those corny documentaries about drug use. And those compositions: check out the horn ending to "Poem for the People" where Kath sings his heart out about "I do-ooooo looooove yoooou" and then the songs strength is totally punched out by a whimsical vanilla horn ending. I blame their producer though. Otherwise, on all albums up to about 16 or 17 when the horns cook, they really cook. And as usual for Chicago, when it is time to write a killer hit, they were at their best! Ballad for a Girl from Buchanan which includes, "Make Me Smile" and "Colour my World" is always a joy to listen to.The rest of the album - save 25 or 6 to 4 (no it's not about drugs) - could have probably been left off and included on some box set in the distant future, say 1996. Chicago Transit Authority recorded this double-barrel follow-up to their eponymously titled 1969 debut effort. The contents of Chicago II (1970) underscore the solid foundation of complex jazz changes with heavy electric rock roll on the first set. The septet also continued their ability to blend the seemingly divergent musical styles into some of the best and most effective pop music of the era. One thing that had changed was the band's name, which was shortened to simply Chicago to avoid any potential litigious situations from the city of Chicago's transportation department -- who claimed the name as proprietary property. Musically, James Pankow (trombone) was about to further cross-pollinate the band's sound with the multi-faceted six-song "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon." The classically inspired suite also garnered two of their most beloved hits -- the upbeat pop opener "Make Me Smile" as well as the achingly poignant "Colour My World" -- both of which remained at the center of t...he group's live sets. Chicago had certainly not abandoned their active pursuit of blending high-octane electric rockers such as "25 or 6 to 4" to the progressive jazz inflections heard in the breezy syncopation of "The Road." Adding further depth of field is the darker "Poem for the People" as well as the politically charged five-song set subtitled "It Better End Soon." These selections feature the combo driving home their formidable musicality and uncanny ability to coalesce styles telepathically and at a moment's notice. The contributions of Terry Kath (guitar/vocals) stand out, as he unleashes some of his most pungent and sinuous leads, contrasting the tight brass and woodwind trio of Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), Walter Parazaider (woodwinds/vocals), and the afore mentioned Pankow. Peter Cetera (bass/vocals) also marks his songwriting debut -- on the final cut of the suite as well as the album -- with "Where Do We Go From Here." It bookends both, with at the very least the anticipation and projection of a positive and optimistic future. Potential consumers should note the unsurpassed sound quality and deluxe packaging of the 2002 CD remaster as well as the single edits of the hits "Make Me Smile" -- extracted from the "Ballet..." -- as well as "25 or 6 to 4," which are not only notably different, but have previously been available only on compilations prior to this reissue. Also included is a miniaturized copy of the eight-panel fold-out poster of the band -- although the lyrics are not included on the reverse, as per the original. Regardless, it is a nice, reminiscent touch. - Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide Read more Less

Chicago

According to -Billboard chart statistics, Chicago is second only to the Beach Boys as the most successful American rock band of all time, in terms of both albums and singles. Judged by album sales, as certified by the R.I.A.A., the band does not rank quite so high, but it is still among the Top Ten best-selling U.S. groups ever.
