Pros: Good music
Cons: Nothing
That's Chicago! My oh my, where do I begin with the greatness of this film! I did not get to see it at the theater, so with the wait to dvd-it was worth it! Number 1: Catherine Zeta Jones, well deserved oscar on her part! Wow. I felt her intsensity right away at scene one- ...And all that jazz, what a number! Number 2: The under rated John C Reilly... I loved that solo he did, he did it so perfectly that I felt his pain come across the screen. Number 3: The charming irresistable Richard Gere, sadly overlooked by the Academy- Watch the tap dance and you're a dancer dancing with him. Number 4: A little gripe... The dialogue was almost exact to the film Roxie Hart with Ginger Rogers. Other than that, I highly recommend it!
Pros: Stars Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah & Richard Gere do all their own son and dancer routines & each one is hotter than fire!
Cons: Cannot think of a one.
With an all woman 'jail house rock' scene and a sexy group of murderous gals, this hit Broadway musical deserved to be immortalized on DVD.
Chicago is a film adaptation of Bob Fosse's (1975) choreographer-director
9;s Broadway musical. The story is mainly about murderesses (played by Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones). It is set in Chicago during the Roaring 1920s after Roxy (Renee Zellweger) flips out after being treated like a whore by a man she loves and shoots him to death. She is arrested after her husband, who feels betrayed, squeals and rats on her.
The jail she enters is run by none other than Queen Latifah, the women's warden who bargains with her prisoners for money to get them attorneys who can have them acquitted. Richard Gere plays Billy, the all sought for attorney, as well as a convincing song and dance man.
The underlying theme of the story is about temporary fame due to a fickle public. Zellweger and Zeta-Jones play incarcerated jail jazz age competing drama queens. Richard Gere plays Billy, an expensive lawyer who is sought after by Zellweger, who does land him. He's also quite convincing as a 1920's showstopping song and dance man.
Zellweger's singing and Zeta-Jones' dancing are spectacular and bring Broadway musicals back to the prominent place where they belong. Chicago is rich with talent. m_d.md.m_d
Pros: Fairly accurate timepiece...
Cons: Sort of corny and some parts drag out...
This is a "Love it" or "Hate it" movie. If you like musicals, you'll love it. If you like jazz, you'll love it. If you're a prohibition history buff, you'll love. If you have a political stance, don't like one of the actors or aren't amuzed by campy (but predictable) storylines, catchy tunes, or flashy scenery... you'll hate it.
Read the other reviews. The "hate it" reviews so far are basically mindless one liners. Well, one does go into a tirade about Richard Gere and Queen Latifah being anti-American. But the rest don't explain WHY they feel they way they do. Many of the positive reviews do at least explain why they like it.
Two things I noticed, though, that no one mentioned...
Chicago is a nod to Fossy and "All that Jazz" (the opening number should be a clue, folks). It's a classic Fossy-type musical right from the start. The music, the scenery, the dance numbers, even the storyline are all very much a tribute to the great Fossy. And, I would say, they do him justice. I have to admit, if you even remotely like this style of music, it'll be days before you can get the songs to stop replaying in your mind.
The message and historical drop of the movie. Fairly accurate look into the jazz and prohibition era. In fact, Renee plays Roxie Hart. Look up Roxie Hart. A good look into Chicago during that era also. You can still feel some of the past in Chicago today that came out of this era of history. And the movie does catch and display some of that classic "Roxie style" Chicago is known for.
This is a movie you either have to own... a classic that, like Gere's song says... will "Rassle Dazzle you"... even if it is campy and showy and somewhat lackluster... you "can't see it with sequins in your eyes" or... it's a movie that you won't be able to stand... not even for a single catchy, flashy, but over the top, showtune. Like a Vegas show... you either love it or hate it.
You decide.
Pros: Amazing songs, awesome dancing, great acting, intricate character development
Cons: Drags a bit once or twice.
Wow, this movie was incredible! I loved every minute of it! The entire cast was terrific, especially Latifa, as Mama! She was definately my favorite character. The songs were cool, they definately had me singing along with them, and they will you too. I would surely suggest this movie to anyone. However some parts did seem to drag on just a bit, but the great storyline made up for it. Definately check it out! You'll love the plot and the characters develop so very well! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Fantastic music
Cons: Filming
I absolutely loved the music in this movie, and I own the sountrack at home, which I listen to all the time. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't run that smoothly, and each musical scene is too close together, not letting any dialouge come in between, which can cause the movie to be very confusing the first time it is viewed. I had to watch it twice before I started to understand the plot line, getting confused over what was going on and if the music scenes were dreams of Renee or what... I also did not really get the fact that she was cheating on her husband at first, either. This made me think he was boring and should have had his musical scene taken out of the movie. Once I saw the movie again, I understood him more and loved his song. This movie is a good one to see, as long as you pay attention carefully but still enjoy yourself!
Very good stories to those reporters.
Very sharp with sense of humour.
disappointing. Some of the music is nice, but it is not worthy of all the hype. Worth seeing once.
Chicago was awesome. It had all the right stars to play the part's and it all flowed along perfectly. This movie is the best movie of 2002 and maybe even 2003.
This movie is a great blend of what time and devotion can produce....very well done
I didn't think I would like it but I was very surprised! The "Celophane Man" song was so touching... is he single?
I, myself, am not fond of musicals, but the day after I saw this movie, I bought the soundtrack. Needless to say this was a fun movie to watch although, I seem to enjoy the first half of the movie than the rest, but it still has been one of the best movies of the year.
This was truly worth the money I spent on it. If any of you enjoyed the soundtrack as equally as I did, then it will be worth it for you too. A good buy. Something you can watch for years to come and still sing along.
"Chicago" is an Indian word, meaning
"foul smells." That describes this film to a tee. Vulgar, offensive disgusting, stupid; can't Hollywood make a decent
big budget film anymore?
This is a great film. Everyone should buy it!
This is a perfect movie. Not being a musicals fan, I was more than impressed with this movie. Very uplifting and energetic, lots of spice. The songs are addictive.
I don't usually enjoy musicals after that treansonist Madonna's "Evita". But I actually liked this movie.
I seen at the movies, I snuck in, and would buy the DVD but I cannot support Richard Gere and Queen Latifah. Latifah and Gere both are left sided loons who don't think twice before opening their big mouth regardless of how disrespectful their opinion is towards America and the American people. So, I can't support them.
But good movie! Such a shame on casting though. :(
Cleverly interwoven musical and screenplay. Surprising good peformances from the cast of actors/actresses not normally known for singing and dancing. Music was fantasic.
Best movie I've seen in a long time! And with Renee Zellweger, my favorite actress. I loved Chicago! The soundtrack was sweet, too!
Chicago is a feature that has been in the coming for so long, in theatre and subsequently in DVD. Catherine Zeta-Jones is exceptional as Velma Kelly as is Renee Zellweger. Richard Gere is also a pleasure to watch. These are actors who are so talented and well-used in this movie. This movie is a refreshing ride through what has become a yearly search for the next big story.
This was not what I had expected. Rene Zellweger can not act. Richard Gere does not sing. The movie was horrible.
IT IS GREAT FUN TO SEE ALL OF THE TALENTED ACTORS SING AND DANCE IN THIS FILM - I'VE SEEN IT FOUR TIMES IN THE THEATER, AND WILL BUY IT IN AUGUST TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN. I ALSO HAVE THE CD!
This movie was excellent. The music was fantastic and the costumes went very well with the scenes. It was a funny movie that had its serious moments. Perfect mix! It was GREAT! I loved it!!!
this is defineatly one of the best musicals of all time, and too see it put into mainstream entertainment is even better!!!
