I'm a fan to a variety of genre. When i listened to Glitter last year, i didn't think it was that bad. Most of the critics here are basically repeating and quoting what they have read in the press esp about the break down and all. You weren't there ...to actually know what happenned. I love many tracks on the album especially the ballads. Her voice was wonderful. Okay now lets talk about charmbracelet. Breathy purrs that you hear on the album is a vocal style and its not easy to do. People are so used to mariahs vocal acrobatics. Here Mariah showcases her vocal flexibility. That's her trademark..to suddenly belt out in the middle of breathy riffs. She has never been better. Compare it to Most 'DIVA' who can only use their normal singing voice and could even mix their falsetto and their pitch smoothly. And Mariah did it easily plus her Minnie Ripperton. But on the other hand, i do miss the time when she would just belt out screaming in her song. She did that in NEVER TOO FAR (Glitter) but no one even care to notice that. Not even an airplay in the US of A. That single was very good. And if u want to review based on what you have heard of or read, don't bother. Take a listen first..then review. The film was not that bad either . She was not a born actress. BUT you should watch the WISE GIRL!!!!! She was SUPRISINGLY GOOD in that. She has got good reviews. You go Mariahhhh!! She has just found her forte.Of all the songs my favourites are, sunflower for Alfren Roy, My Saving Grace, Yours, Clown, I only wanted and TTR. I love her prorific song writing skills. Can't wait for her next album. Read more Less

    SO AMAZING!!!!!!! & SPECTACULAR!!!!! A M

Pros: MARIAH IS BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER!!!!

Cons: THIS CD IS JUST ABSOLUTELY ONE OF MARIAH'S BEST ALBUMS!

I just can't believe how amazing this CD came to be. Her ballads are breath taking and her upbeat hits like Bringin' On the Heartbreak, Yours, Boy(I need you), Lullaby (spectacular)are sooooooooo awesome! Her ballads such as Through the Rain... and My Saving Grace are so beautifully sang by the lovely MC! (Christina can't even hit MC's high notes. Not even Beyonce) Her voice is so celestial and just wow it's so unbelievable. Her lyrics are very passionate and impressive. What I find so impressive is that she composes her own material. This CD is definitely a must have because anyone who knows what good music is all about should have a copy of this CD. What's even more amazing is that Mariah is already working on her next CD due out by late 2004! Baby! She's already half way done with her next album while touring all across the world. She is also going to do a duet with another amazing singer, STEVIE WONDER! Since when do you see Christina or Beyonce touring across the globe, NEVER! Mariah is and will always be the best singer in the world!! She has touched the hearts of millions. Why do you think she has so many loyal fans? Britney or J-Lo can't even be compared to Mariah, they never will be. I did not mean to degrade other singers/artists it's just that Mariah has not been treated right and justly by the media! So anyone who values and knows what good music is you should go get yourself a copy of Charmbracelet! and Mariah's recent release of her REMIX ALBUM! That's another must have!!! Go buy both CD's ASAP!!! Read more Less

If it didn't follow Glitter, the gold standard for Diva Implosions in the early 21st Century, Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet would simply be her worst album, but since it was rushed out in late 2002 in an effort to mask that disaster, to treat it as if it never happened, it achieves a special kind of grandeur - it's a botched attempt to restore a career after a botched attempt at a crossover. Of course, the Carey party line, including her new label Island (who has sponsored her vanity imprint, MonarC), claims her lone Virgin album Glitter shouldn't be considered an official Mariah album since it was a soundtrack, but not only does that theory not hold water (perhaps Purple Rain shouldn't be considered a Prince album, then?), it signals that everybody realizes that Glitter wasn't just a disaster, but that her whole ghetto fabulous trip of the late '90s eroded her core MOR audience. So, with Charmbracelet, the backpeddling is immediately evident, from the demure photos gracing the artwork ...(the tight shorts of Rainbow are long gone) and the first single/opening track "Through the Rain," a slow ballad designed as "Vision of Love" meets "Hero." Mariah is back in the adult contemporary camp, no longer trying to prove that she's real. She hasn't completely abandoned hip-hop, but whenever it rears its head on Charmbracelet, it's utterly jarring, whether it's Jay-Z and Freeway's guest spots on "You Got Me," the club-ready groove of "You Had Your Chance" (built on the same bass line as "Nuthin' But a G Thang"), the blatant rewrite of Cam'Ron's "Oh Boy" on "Boy (I Need You)" (he may endorse it with a cameo, yet the sampled vocal hook remains singularly annoying no matter how its presented) or the crackling vinyl used as ambient noise on "Irresistible" or the distracting use of dripping water as percussion on "I Only Wanted." Weirdly enough, even these detours are nothing more than flourishes - window-dressing on songs that remain firmly in the middle of the road, since that's where the sales are, or at least where Mariah's aging fanbase is. This, of course, is not a problem, since she's done hip-hop-influenced dance tunes and ballads very well before. What is a problem is that there is no good songs on this record outside of Def Leppard's power ballad classic "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," which isn't even covered all that well. What is a greater problem is that Mariah's voice is shot, sounding in tatters throughout the record. Whenever she sings, there's a raspy whistle behind her thin voice and she strains to make notes throughout the record. She cannot coo or softly croon, nor can she perform her trademark gravity-defying vocal runs. Her voice is damaged, and there's not a moment where it sounds strong or inviting. That alone would be disturbing but since the songs are formless and the production bland - another reason why the hip-hop announces itself, even though its nowhere near as pronounced as it has been since Butterfly - her tired voice becomes the only thing to concentrate on, and it's a sad, ugly thing, making an album that would merely have been her worst into something tragic. - Tom Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Mariah Carey

The bestselling female performer of the 1990s, Mariah Carey rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning fiveoctave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hiphopinspired dancepop, she earned frequent comparison to rivals Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, but did them both one better by composing all of her own material. Born in Long Isla... Read more
