This album is as GREAT as I knew it woul

    By iamtheraceman  May 7, 2003

Charlie Allen played at the First Turn when it existed here in the Daytona Beach area a few years ago. There was a definate difference between the kind of music and attitude you got from Charlie and those he played with versus the other bands that wo...uld frequent. You could look at the performance he and his band were giving and know that one day, people would be buying tickets for this! He was working on his album back then, and many of us were anticipating the time we would be able to take home all the great songs we got to hear only a few times a month. I was the DJ at the First Turn in those days, playing music and dance breaks between sets, and had the priveledge of Charlies company while he was writing. Its one thing to hear a new song from an artist hit the radio and start selling. Its yet another to witness some of those songs being created and THEN go on to radio and start selling. Charlie is a very personable and friendly individual who has a sincere adoration for what he does and the personality to carry it farther than anyone else ever could with the same talents and material. Charlie, if you read this, heres a BIG HELLO from the Raceman. Good luck to you. Its such a joy to see this album finally come to be. To those of you reading this that have not yet heard the album or grabbed a copy, you have my assurance as a fellow country fan that you will NOT be disappointed! Find it, own it, and love it! P.S. Charlie, wheres Violets and Violins? I hope itll be on your next album, and I hope it comes out pretty quick! (Violets and Violins made me cry while I was in the DJ booth trying to work. Nobodys EVER got that to happen before.) Thanks for reading, and hope you all enjoy the CD and support this great guy like all of us in Daytona! Read more Less

One of the strongest voices to come to the charts. Talent equal to the legends of Country Music

Though a bit heavy in cliché, Charlie Allen's self-titled debut merits some serious consideration of the singer's talent. Most of the collection sounds reflects the country sound of the 1980's, which actually charms rather than detracts. After all, country was building steam during this decade attracting a widening demographic. The flaw is essentially a hit- and- miss in consistency. Allen's ballad deliveries come across honest and genuine, with “As If" as a fine example both of mood and song writing. “Thanks To You," with its acoustic guitar licks is another solid ballad. Allen, born Charles Allen Bouton, co-wrote 11 of the 12 cuts, including these two. That is a dangerous choice for a new artist. Often, the decision to co-write an entire album excludes diversity, a key characteristic in a fickle music industry. The result of this decision for Charlie Allen means a few mediocre cuts such as the revved up “Gettin' Nowhere Fast" that really doesn't get anywhere but “clichéville."Allen d...id, however, make the wise choice to write with country great Earl Thomas Conley, whose work does add a bit of 80's charm on cuts such as “Mind Over Matter," one of Allen's best performances of the album. The musical accompaniment on the album is also a plus, with a variety of harmonica, steel and electric guitar.Charlie Allen has proved that he has the talent to join the ranks of the hit makers; now it's time to step back, diversify a bit, and distinguish himself from the deluge of male country acts vying for radio airplay. - Rick Cohoon, All Music Guide Read more Less
