Stevie's Most Underrated Work Of The 80's

    By Andre'  Jan 1, 2006

Pros: Terrific Songwriting And Great Melodies

    Cons: Not too experimental

'Characters' is one of Stevie Wonder's best albums of the 80's.It does have a slick pop style to it but consists primarily of uptempo tunes such as the superbly crafted "One Of A Kind","Crying Through The Night" an...d "Galaxy Paradise" as well as the ferocious funk of "Skeletons",&qu
ot;Dark N Lovely" and "My Eyes Don't Cry".Two ballads "With Each Beat Of My Heart" and "You Will Know" are,in fact highly un sentimental and are not typical Wonder of this era,in fact the former is positive self help advice.Since I was six years old I have listened to this recording too many times. It turned me on to Stevie Wonder's music in a big way and for those young fans who want the same thing I recommend his newest CD 'A Time 2 Love'!

Wonder shocked fans by taking only two years to release his next new non-soundtrack studio album, Characters. Unfortunately, it had long since become clear that Wonder was willing to settle for good pop music without challenging himself to make great pop music. And by now, a big chunk of his formerly mass audience had gotten the message: this was Wonder's first new album to miss the pop Top Five in 15 years. (The Black music audience, however, responded far more favorably, as the album topped the RB charts for seven weeks.) The biggest single was the "Superstition"-like dance track "Skeletons" (19 Pop, 1 RB), and Wonder also charted with the pretty "You Will Know" and an uptempo duet with Michael Jackson, "Get It."
