After initially being lumped in with the acid-rock revival scene, Chapterhouse was pegged as one of the British "shoegazer" groups of the early '90s, along with Lush, Moose, and Slowdive. They formed in Reading in 1987 with Andrew Sherriff (guitar, vocals), Simon Rowe (guitar), Ashley Bates (drums), and Jon Curtis (bass; replaced by Russell Barrett early on).
