Centennial - an inspiring experience
, September 3, 2003Reviewer: belan_torres - See all belan_torres's reviews1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Centennial review helpful It goes back a long way into my youth, my fondness for Centennial. But, it took me nothing short of forever to actually own it on video. And I'm pleased to say that I'm very happy with the result. The 12 tape set of Centennial videos is complete, and uncut; and the film itself is beautifully restored, looking very much as I'm sure it did on it's original braodcast on NBC in the late 1970s.
Centennial is an epic story of 200 years in the history of a fictional Colorado town, called, of course, Centennial. Based on the book by James A Michener, Centennial stays very close to Michener's novel, and his characters and vivid history (expertly researched by the author)come stunningly to life.
Standout performances include Gregory Harrison (now on Broadway, in Chicago) as Levi Zendt, one of the founders of Centennial; Richard Chamberlain as Scottish mountainman Alexander McKeag; Alex Kaaras as Russian imigrant Hans Brumbaugh; Lynn Redgrave as the venerable Charlotte Buckland; and veteran television character actor Stephen McHattie as the renegade Jacques "Jake" Pasquinel.
A well-taught and enjoyable lesson in history, in the form of a sweeping, and often overwhelming 25 hour TV event. Centennial is a definite must-own, for any discerning video library.
