D.A. rides the Riverdance bandwagon!!!
, October 7, 1999Reviewer: dukewallymondo_mark2 - See all dukewallymondo_mark2's reviewsActually, he practically takes the reigns and goes headlong into one of those stone walls they sing about in this, his latest release for Windam Hill. Dave mentions in his liner notes that he felt the time was right to record and put his own collection of celtic music...Yeah, right, like we're supposed to believe that it was his own inspiration which moved him to get his creative juices flowing on the Irish side of the musical realm. With the phenominal and unpresidented success of Riverdance and D.A.'s own ability to do this kind of music with his ears closed, it's no wonder that he "felt the time was right" to CASH IN! I'm going to, however, let him get away with that, because once again he's got me hooked. And, you know, Dave can't resist ultimately going back to his big screen-action/adventure way of doing things, which explains the last track on the album. Riverdance THAT, Mr. Flatley! Gut check! Pro Reviews: Celtic Book of Days
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Anyone who loves the Chieftains but is looking for music with more of a beat will likely end up wearing out this jewel of a CD, 66 minutes of some of the most delectably written and produced Celtic-themed instrumental music ever recorded by anybody. "Equos Fair" starts off with a spirited quotation of original and traditional themes (especially one piece that is often quoted by Alan Stivell) on pipes, tin whistle, harp, guitar, and drums, with horns -- the effect sort of makes one think of the Chieftains imitating Ennio Morricone. There are some gorgeous choral passages as well, and swelling, airy new age interludes (after all, this is a Windham Hill release), and synthesizer-ornamented sections that may recall Mike Oldfield at his most lyrical. Some tracks, like "Heart of Spring," move a little too close to Celtic-flavored movie music, but even there it's good Celtic-flavored film-style composition. Overall, this is memorable, alternately exciting and soothing, and one of the most worthwhile releases in the Windham Hill catalog. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |
