If you dont know who John Waters is or if you are happy with the way movies are wake the f*** up! John Waters is best remembered for his trashy over the top gross out cult movie Pink Flamingos and for his overly sweet Hairspray with Ricki Lake, and movies today can realy suck but this one moves away from traditional cinema and says Punish the bad movies and does it so that you wont stop laughing the whole way through from movie star kidnapings to porno movie houses to a wild orgy on the roof of a drive-in projection house this movie will keep you entertained for all 88 min and dont bitch about that, moives are too damn long today anyway!
This is 100% John Waters fun. His films have always seemed mischievious, like a teenager having fun with the camcorder. The idea for the film is admirable (even though BOWFINGER covered several ground), and Alicia Witt is awesome. There has always been something care-free about John Waters films. And that's why I've always been a fan. No matter how stupid John Water's films are, you always have a good time. Admit it.
Following in the proud footsteps of "South Park: Bigger etc.", "Cecil B." wins the coveted Alex Lewin Best of the Year award.
"This film freakin' roolz! Two thumbs up (ahem)" -- Alex Lewin
"Uh, he said thumbs up..." -- Beavis
Many people didn't quite "get" the style of this movie. The film wasn't meant to be done well. Its a movie about a BAD film director done in a style that matches the subject matter. Its campy kids...but not quite as in your face as some would have expected.
Just pretend that Cecil was the director and it will all make sense.
I'm embarassed to say that I actually watched most of this total waste of time before finally giving up toward the end. It actually opened with some promise -- a cute campy feeling that a good moviemaker might create when trying to give a bad b-movie feeling to a film, but it quickly turned out that the initial bad b-movie level was the absolute pinnicle this film reached. I continued watching through minute after minute of horrible acting gracing a horrible screenplay, hoping that *any* kind of redeeming quality would emerge. It didn't. Nothing.
Not one second of the movie offered any reason to waste one's time on it. Not even one.
What's to say? It's a fairly mainstream piece for Waters, and yet it will spook some people. I found it to be non-stop hilarious. And beautiful, simply beautiful.
