Pro Reviews: Cash Sings Cash
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Johnny Cash was quite simply one of the most iconic figures in the history of country music, and his low, rumbling voice and blackclad figure burned an indelible image into the imaginations of music fans around the world. However, the force of that image tends to outweigh the fact that Cash not only sang great songs, he wrote 'em too, and this collection of twentyone topnotch sides from Cash's days at Sun Records is a potent reminder that many of his finest performances came from songs that emerged from his own pen. In fact, a quick scan of the track list for Cash Sings Cash suggests this disc could have been called Johnny Cash's Greatest Sun Hits and few would have cause to object, with musthave sides like "I Walk The Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "Hey, Porter", "Big River" and "Home Of The Blues" on board. A quick spin through this compilation also gives an impressive picture of the diversity of Cash's compositions, from novelties full of sass and swagger like "Big River" and "Mean Eyed Cat" to stark tales of love and loss such as "I Walk The Line" and "Home Of The Blues", not to mention some heartbreaking narratives ("Give My Love To Rose") and jaunty celebrations of Southern life ("Country Boy"). It's all but impossible to imagine another singer making as much of Cash's compositions as Cash himself, but judging from Cash Sings Cash, if the guy simply landed as gig as a staff songwriter at Hill and Range or AcuffRose in the early 1950's, he'd still have become a legendary name in country music as a writer and a singer, the man clearly had the goods, and this set is thoroughly satisfying from front to back. - Mark Deming, All Music Guide |
