Good Greatest Hits Album
, August 8, 2001Reviewer:
Brian Rathjen - See all Brian Rathjen's reviews This Capitol Collectors Series album was a collection of some of Merle Haggard's biggest hits from his years at Capitol Records. Included are prime examples of Merle's biggest hits from early in his career. I especially enjoyed some of the songs that are lesser known to fans -- or those that aren't usually thought of in the same breath of his biggest and greatest -- like "Mama Tried," "Okie from Muskogee," and "The Fightin' Side of Me." For example, there's his remake of the Ernest Tubb hit, "Soldier's Last Letter," which was a poignant remake relevant to the Vietnam era (just as ol' ET's version was relevant to World War II). And while "Movin' On" the TV series didn't last, we can still remember the adventures of Kip and Sonny through Merle's rousing rendition of that show's theme song. Though there's certainly nothing wrong with the album's songs, I would recommend more complete Greatest Hits compliations over this album. This might appeal to the more casual country fan rather than die-hard Merle fans (who'd buy everything he put out anyway just to have it). However, Merle's contribution to the Capitol Collectors Series is still a good album and a great starting point for those studying Merle's music. ...

Pro Reviews: Capitol Collectors Series
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Like any Capitol Collectors Series, Merle Haggard's compilation contains an odd mix of classic and lesser-known hits, with a couple of obscurities thrown in for good measure. Though many of his very best songs -- "Swinging Doors," "The Bottle Let Me Down," "Sing Me Back Home," "Hungry Eyes," "Okie from Muskogee" -- are featured, classics like "Mama Tried," "Sing A Sad Song," "Branded Man," "Carolyn," "If We Make It Through December," and "Kentucky Gambler" aren't included. Which means that Capitol Collectors Series is a good sampler of Haggard's classic work and, therefore a good introduction to his sound, even if it isn't a definitive retrospective. At the time of its release, some of the gaps Capitol Collectors Series left were filled by More of the Best. Both discs have since been supersceded by the comprehensive double-disc The Lonesome Fugitive. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
