  • All Music Guide

This little-known quintet set matches the young pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (then known as Dollar Brand) with the tenor of Basil Coetzee, altoist Robbie Jansen, bassist Paul Michaels and drummer Monty Weber on two of his melodic and somewhat spiritual originals ("Cape Town Fringe" and "The Pilgrim"). The Chiaroscuro LP is brief (just 26 1/2 minutes) and will be difficult to find, but the themes are well-played and a bit haunting.
