Whoops, no battery power left !

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 3, 2004 | 60 out of 68 found this Canon PowerShot S410 review helpful

    Pros: Excellent images, rugged

Cons: No current battery level indicator

I spent a lot of time online researching compact digital cameras and narrowed my choice down to the Nikon Coolpix 3700 and the Canon S410. I went with the Canon because the reviews consistently said the image quality was excellent (not all reviews o...f the Nikon said images "excellent" or "outstanding") and because the reviews seemed to indicate the Canon s410 was more rugged/durable than the Nikon.I have found that the camera images are indeed excellent and it does indeed seem rugged BUT I do regret getting it as it has one MAJOR flaw:I have been using digital cameras for over 10 years and every single one of them had an indicator which told the user how much power was left in the battery. I was surprised to find out that this newer Canon model does not have such a feature. It does give you a warning when the battery is low BUT that happens when there is just about enough power to take 4 more pictures (even conserving power by not using the LCD). I found this out on a long day of sightseeing, early in the day, and missed out on many many great shots because the low battery warning came on way too late. When I talked to Canon about it they said that yes, that is the only battery indicator provided. So I am left with the option of recharging the battery just to make sure I have a good charge - maybe when it does not need it (note: Canon recommends recharging ONLY when the battery is low as there is a limit to how many times you can charge the battery).... or I can count how many photos I took since the last charge. As battery power is a critical factor the useful functioning of digital cameras, I am very disappointed that Canon did not see fit to provide a better power level indicator for this camera AND also sorry that none of the professional and owner reviews ever mentioned this limitation to warn potential buyers. Canon S410

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 9, 2004 | 6 out of 7 found this Canon PowerShot S410 review helpful

Pros: Very easy to use and pictures are great

    Cons: Don't have any yet

I bought the camera about 3 weeks ago and I love it. I've taken a lof of pics so far and most have turned out great. I have been trying different things to see what works and just trying to get use to the camera. In low light you need to make ...some adjustments. The video mode is great. I wasn't sure about it since it was less resolution than other cameras, but it's fine for what I need. I am glad that I went with this camera instead of the Sony. Read more Less

LCD Screen is a piece of junk

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 12, 2006

Pros: you can donate an extra $115 to canon when the screen breaks!

Cons: LCD screen and memory card reader

i had my S410 camera for about 10 months, it was in my pocket when the LCD screen broke. cannon would not warranty the camera, claiming that too much pressure was put on the screen. my old S110 has worked flawlessly for the last 4 years, and i figure...d that the "upgraded" model would be nicer. not so. MANY people have had problems with the LCD screens and the memory cards. Instead of paying $115 to have it fixed, i'll put that money towards another brand. Read more Less

    Inexcusable lack of features

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 24, 2005 | 1 out of 3 found this Canon PowerShot S410 review helpful

    Pros: Small size

Cons: Lack of features, picture quality, small size

This camera should be considered only for the most basic point-and-shoot needs. A total lack of features render it useless to anybody who has ever used a camera before. You have no control over the F-Stop, and minimal control over shutter speed. Pict...ures are often blurry in part because the Automatic mode is total crap, and in part because the camera is too small to hold steady. The LCD is small and unprotected, and the camera as a whole feels flimsy. Also rather annoying is the fact that there is no AC adapter for the camera - you have to remove the battery to charge it.
