Pros: Compact, lightweight, excellent interface, quality construction, crisp pictures
Cons: not so good indoors or with flash.
This is a wonderful camera for everyday use - it stays in my backpack and journeys to and from work with me so I'm always prepared for any photo op. It's about the same size as most cell phones and rides comfortably in a pocket. I especially love it for hiking and traveling - it is not a burden to carry and it is easy to handle.
Image quality is excellent outdoors or indoors with strong sunlight. But poorly lit situations without the flash generally yield grainy images. The flash itself is necessarily small and so not particularly effective.
Construction is very solid. I like the pure rectangular shape - IMO it makes the camera easier to handle and hold. It is also very stable on any flat surface for a timed shot. Canon's user interface is the best. The SD card and battery are easily accessible and I'm not worried that the cover will break any time soon. I'm particularly impressed with the battery charger design. It has a receptacle for the battery and the plug folds into the charger housing - no cord. Just pop the battery into it, flip the plug out and stick it in the wall.
Pros: Good
Cons: N/A
I bought a SD1000 from Bashundhara City, Dhaka. Price is affordable and the quality of product is good. Specially this one is made in japan.
I like this one.
Pros: Seems SLR like but it's not. So small it can fit in your pocket. Aluminum case looks and feels great.
Cons: No IS. Zoom sucks without IS. ISO sucks past 400.
This camera has been by my side every where I go for the past year. It replaced my horrible Kodak point-n-shoot (sorry Kodak!) and I've been all smiles since. I've taken some wonderful pictures with this and even though I have a DSLR, it still goes with me. I recommend trying to keep the ISO 400 and under to get the best quality pics possible. Past that, the noise ruins the picture. Make sure you hold still when taking a picture, especially when zooming in, because no image stabilization means blurred shots.
Pros: Fast, light, excellent picture quality, durable, inexpensive, nice design.
Cons: No image stabilization. The new model (SD1100) has added this feature.
Fantastic camera, easy to use & takes great pictures. It is also very fast - it's ready to shoot within about half of a second of turning it on. Download the CHDK firmware hack and you will have many of the features of much more expensive cameras like RAW shooting, bracketing, and tons of customization. I can't say enough about this camera. I got the SD600 about 2 years ago and upgraded to this one about 4 months ago. I gave my roommate my old one when his second Olympus broke & he loves it!
Pros: Compact. Great quality photos. Good battery life. Good video quality
Cons: Slow shutter lag.
I brought this camera with me on holidays to Japan recently. The picture quality was VERY good at highest resolution. Picture file size varies from about 2.5MB to 4.5 MB a picture though. The video quality is excellent but, obviously, it eats up a lot of space on your memory cards. I used the camera extensively each day (Filled 6 gigs worth of cards). Taking photos and video clips like a madman and got about 2 days battery life out of it. When used intermittently at home etc, the battery lasted a couple of weeks. About the only problem I had was with the shutter lag. Was a little bit slow compared to other cameras I have used but, over all, I thought this was a great camera. PERFECT for carrying everywhere. One thing to note though. The camera comes with a 32MB memory card so you might want to stock up.
Pros: great user interface, fast image processor, digital zoom is clear, gorgeous screen, little and compact, great battery life, excellent shooting modes
Cons: Useless flash in even relatively light rooms, no battery meter except when going dead
The Canon SD1000 digital camera is a great camera, although there are some exceptions. The SD1000 has a great user interface, beautiful screen, and great zoom quality. The only bad parts about this camera are that when the camera is at full optical and digital zoom indoors, the flash actually makes the picture darker, which can be quite annoying, especially at weddings and there is no battery meter until the battery is 5 minutes from dying. Now on to the processor. My brother has a brand new Kodak model and compared to that camera, the SD1000 is a speeding bullet. The DIGIC III image processor is super fast and I also have a High Speed SD memory card, which doubles the speed. Also, the face detection technology is truly a sight to behold. Most other cameras with face detection only find the face when you push the shutter button half way down, and is usually not very accurate. When you point the SD1000 at a person, however, the camera finds the faces, puts boxes around them, and then follows the face as it or the camera moves, all without having to push the shutter button half-way down. Very nice.
Overall, the Canon SD1000 is a great camera with a relatively low price tag, but could use some improvements in the furute.
Pros: Very good image quality, high resoulution and etc...
Cons: Battery indicator does not show up unless it's almost dead. Supplied memory is not sufficient for me.
If you're looking for a compact camera that can do DSLR, you are looking at the right item. This baby has 18 Shooting modes and you can adjust the color to vivid, sepia, darker skin tone etc.. She can fit in your pocket and would save you from dragging around DSLRs, but of course, the cons show up here too. So what you can do is, buy an extra batt and if you have the charger with you, you shouldn't have much of a problem. Now for the memory. An SD Card would be cheap and has cards up to 40 GB or something if you like taking thousands of pictures everyday! But still you can decently buy a 1 GB for something like $ 37 or something. You can get good specifications from the URL below

Pros: Small, features, photo results.
Cons: Battery-life indicator
I am completely satisfied with my purchase. An excellent point and shoot camera; turn it on and it's good to go. The features are greats and so are the different modes. Video and sound quality are great! My photos come out superb. What I really like is that it is small and with just a protective skin, it easy fits in my back pocket. I don't have to worry about scratching it because of the skin I bought for it, and it's small size means I can bring it anywhere - in my pocket - without bringing along a carrying case.
Perfect quality, like the others have stated, the pros outweigh the cons.
Pros: Crisp image, vivid colors, fast shutter
Cons: Bad red eye feature
I think the SD1000 is an excellent camera, it is small, light weight and durable (I know I've all ready dropped it). It takes excellent pictures with very bright and true colors, however the only real down side to this camera is the red eye feature does not work well indoors with a flash. It's nothing a decent image editing program can't fix... the software with the camera is crap but if you can work around that little problem it is an excellent camera with an excellent price. I would definitely recommend it!
Pros: Many different features and settings with great quality photos.
Cons: No battery indicator, not ALL the modes
I love this camera, as my first camera this thing is AMAZING. I love all the different settings and modes it has (Macro is awesome) and it gets the right colors wherever you are. You can record in 30fps with great quality or lower quality. May you want something a little faster? how about 60fps in 320x240? Something that you don't need to be very high quality? They also have a "compact mode" it records at 15fps with 320x240 resolution.
The only cons I can think about this is: It has to battery indicator and there's no Solarize or negative art feature. But those are things that the computer can do!
Overall: Tiny, powerful camera.
Pros: It DID take great pics and video
Cons: Needs better auto focus

I have owned several Canon A series, Canon SD series, the Canon S series and also the S2/S3 IS. So here's the skinny as an amateur user.
A series - The A series is best for you if you're looking for a low cost camera that gives you a wide range of features, many manual controls and great image quality. Although, the size is bigger than SD series making it a jacket-pocket camera, the advantage is in the styling. It gives you a convenient grip on the side which helps hold the camera steady and results in less "blurry" pictures. The mode selector dial on top helps you zip through selections. The convenience of AA batteries which are available in every corner of the world, no missing out on pictures as your battery was discharged, might be a selling point for those who travel a lot.
The S3 IS has a great image sensor, the wonderful image stabilization, a great zoom and super macro function that can produce never before pictures. The flip out screen helps take shots from angles you've never considered before. It's also just a little more expensive and pretty bulky. If taking great pictures is all you care about and do not mind carrying a bulkier camera, the S3 will be a great choice. It's the first step towards a real professional camera.
And finally (drumroll) - the SD series. Small. Cute. Slips into your shirt front pocket without making it sag. If you're wondering about the style, the square "retro" design is better. Does not slip out from your fingers as easily as the curved edge ones. Since it is so small some features like different shooting modes are accessible only through the menu which makes changing between them more cumbersome. Sometimes I've just preferred to stay on Auto rather than missing the shot while I navigated to the right mode. They also have less manual or user defined controls like flash power reduction which I miss. The flash incidentally, can get very strong in lower light or indoor situations and often bleaches out color from people's faces. If you turn off the flash then you have to use a tripod or have the camera on a flat surface to prevent shaky pictures. I also find that the smallness and lightness of the SD series makes my hand shake more than when I'm holding the A series camera with the side grip. I get more fuzzy pics with the SD series than my A series and it's annoying to see the camera-shake warning each time on the screen I am trying to take a shot. I also get a little more red eye with this series probably because the flash is so close to the lens.
Having said all that, guess which camera travels with me most often. My SD1000. Just because it's small and fits into my tiny purse or pocket. I'd never take along the S3 on a daily basis and would miss some great photo ops...On the SD 1000 there is a red eye correction feature so you can remove red eye right on the camera. The other improvement over the previous SD series is the automatic face detection which helps reduce the flash glare on faces so pictures come out better. This is the one to buy folks!
And what about some other Canon features? (If you're a regular Canon user skip reading this section, as you already know all this good stuff.):
- It has an intelligent focusing system with DIGIC III (up from DIGIC II earlier) auto red eye correction and face detection (see above).
- SD card slot - cheap to buy 2 GB cards You can choose from 4 sizes for the pics depending on the size you may want to store/ print.
-Photo-stitch - For stitching together panoramic views. I have shot countless seascapes, 'bridge'scapes, and landscapes from all my Canons using this function and stitching together 6-10 shots in one. It's easy.
-Macro mode - Great for close ups of babies or product shots
