    Superb Digital Camera!

By JasperH  Jul 4, 2007 | 10 out of 11 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

Pros: Very easy to use, Loaded with features (16 shooting modes!), Large and vibrant 3.0" LCD screen, Has Canon's new Digic III Image processor - Superb battery life and AF face recongnition so your pictures look their very best.

Cons: The screen does not show the battery meter unless it's close to dying. Not much of a complaint. The pros defintiely outweigh the cons if there are any.

Just last week I purchased the Canon SD1000 digital ELPH camera at my local Costco warehouse and I must say I've never been more satisfied with any other camera. I replaced my 2 year old Konica Minolta DiMage camera with this one and I&#3...9;m glad I did. The Canon SD1000 has SUPERB battery life thanks to Canon's new Digic III processor, and it has AF face recognition which finds and tracks each face through the camera lense (CCD). Sure it sounds a little bit farfetched, but it really TRACKS the faces even if you shift the camera slightly, the AF face recognition system will follow. This allows the camera to focus more intently on what you want the picture to be of and allows your pictures to look their very best. The 3.0" LCD screen was definitely a welcome change to my previous 2.0" LCD screen, and there are no stray pixels, operating up to par with canon's guarantee that 99.99% of the pixels work. The camera is fully loaded with 16 different shooting modes, 30 fps AVI movie recording and 7.2 Mega-pixel shots allowing for high quality photos. The digital camera takes normal SD memory chips and also the new SD HC (high capacity) memory chips allowing up to 2 GB storage space! WOW. The 3x optical zoom is normally plenty for me, but the 4x digital zoom is also welcome, and because of their new Digic image processor, the digital zoom looks almost as good as the optical zoom! The shutter speed is nice, capturing the picture right after you press the button, the flash is quick and effective, providing true to life photos that everyone is looking for. My only complaint is the battery meter thing which I mentioned in the cons, and that the camera did NOT come with a carrying case in the box, although it did come with a wrist strap and a 32 MB memory chip (good for maybe.. 50 photos on medium quality) With so many digital camera's on the market, it's hard to choose from nowadays, but I guarantee if you purchase the Canon SD1000 Digital ELPH camera, you won't regret it. -Happy shopping! Great Camera with a few minor Cons.

By Ben  Feb 15, 2008 | 3 out of 3 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

Pros: great user interface, fast image processor, digital zoom is clear, gorgeous screen, little and compact, great battery life, excellent shooting modes

Cons: Useless flash in even relatively light rooms, no battery meter except when going dead

The Canon SD1000 digital camera is a great camera, although there are some exceptions. The SD1000 has a great user interface, beautiful screen, and great zoom quality. The only bad parts about this camera are that when the camera is at full optical a...nd digital zoom indoors, the flash actually makes the picture darker, which can be quite annoying, especially at weddings and there is no battery meter until the battery is 5 minutes from dying. Now on to the processor. My brother has a brand new Kodak model and compared to that camera, the SD1000 is a speeding bullet. The DIGIC III image processor is super fast and I also have a High Speed SD memory card, which doubles the speed. Also, the face detection technology is truly a sight to behold. Most other cameras with face detection only find the face when you push the shutter button half way down, and is usually not very accurate. When you point the SD1000 at a person, however, the camera finds the faces, puts boxes around them, and then follows the face as it or the camera moves, all without having to push the shutter button half-way down. Very nice. Overall, the Canon SD1000 is a great camera with a relatively low price tag, but could use some improvements in the furute. Read more Less

    Excellent point and shoot

By Ryan K  Nov 2, 2007 | 3 out of 3 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

Pros: Crisp image, vivid colors, fast shutter

    Cons: Bad red eye feature

I think the SD1000 is an excellent camera, it is small, light weight and durable (I know I've all ready dropped it). It takes excellent pictures with very bright and true colors, however the only real down side to this camera is the red eye featu...re does not work well indoors with a flash. It's nothing a decent image editing program can't fix... the software with the camera is crap but if you can work around that little problem it is an excellent camera with an excellent price. I would definitely recommend it! Read more Less

    Great Camera, Great Price

    By robotinpgh@gmail.com  Jun 5, 2008 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

Pros: Fast, light, excellent picture quality, durable, inexpensive, nice design.

Cons: No image stabilization. The new model (SD1100) has added this feature.

Fantastic camera, easy to use & takes great pictures. It is also very fast - it's ready to shoot within about half of a second of turning it on. Download the CHDK firmware hack and you will have many of the features of much more expensive cameras... like RAW shooting, bracketing, and tons of customization. I can't say enough about this camera. I got the SD600 about 2 years ago and upgraded to this one about 4 months ago. I gave my roommate my old one when his second Olympus broke & he loves it! Canon ixus 70 (SD1000)

Pros: Compact. Great quality photos. Good battery life. Good video quality

    Cons: Slow shutter lag.

I brought this camera with me on holidays to Japan recently. The picture quality was VERY good at highest resolution. Picture file size varies from about 2.5MB to 4.5 MB a picture though. The video quality is excellent but, obviously, it eats up a lo...t of space on your memory cards. I used the camera extensively each day (Filled 6 gigs worth of cards). Taking photos and video clips like a madman and got about 2 days battery life out of it. When used intermittently at home etc, the battery lasted a couple of weeks. About the only problem I had was with the shutter lag. Was a little bit slow compared to other cameras I have used but, over all, I thought this was a great camera. PERFECT for carrying everywhere. One thing to note though. The camera comes with a 32MB memory card so you might want to stock up. Read more Less

    Excellent Camera!!!

    By //zero  Jan 11, 2008 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

    Pros: Small, features, photo results.

    Cons: Battery-life indicator

I am completely satisfied with my purchase. An excellent point and shoot camera; turn it on and it's good to go. The features are greats and so are the different modes. Video and sound quality are great! My photos come out superb. What I really l...ike is that it is small and with just a protective skin, it easy fits in my back pocket. I don't have to worry about scratching it because of the skin I bought for it, and it's small size means I can bring it anywhere - in my pocket - without bringing along a carrying case. Perfect quality, like the others have stated, the pros outweigh the cons. Read more Less

    Great for new people

By Nick  Oct 17, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH(1814B002) review helpful

Pros: Many different features and settings with great quality photos.

Cons: No battery indicator, not ALL the modes

I love this camera, as my first camera this thing is AMAZING. I love all the different settings and modes it has (Macro is awesome) and it gets the right colors wherever you are. You can record in 30fps with great quality or lower quality. May you wa...nt something a little faster? how about 60fps in 320x240? Something that you don't need to be very high quality? They also have a "compact mode" it records at 15fps with 320x240 resolution. The only cons I can think about this is: It has to battery indicator and there's no Solarize or negative art feature. But those are things that the computer can do! Overall: Tiny, powerful camera. Read more Less

    Wonderful for everyday use.

    By Craig  Nov 12, 2008

Pros: Compact, lightweight, excellent interface, quality construction, crisp pictures

Cons: not so good indoors or with flash.

This is a wonderful camera for everyday use - it stays in my backpack and journeys to and from work with me so I'm always prepared for any photo op. It's about the same size as most cell phones and rides comfortably in a pocket. I especially ...love it for hiking and traveling - it is not a burden to carry and it is easy to handle.Image quality is excellent outdoors or indoors with strong sunlight. But poorly lit situations without the flash generally yield grainy images. The flash itself is necessarily small and so not particularly effective.Construction is very solid. I like the pure rectangular shape - IMO it makes the camera easier to handle and hold. It is also very stable on any flat surface for a timed shot. Canon's user interface is the best. The SD card and battery are easily accessible and I'm not worried that the cover will break any time soon. I'm particularly impressed with the battery charger design. It has a receptacle for the battery and the plug folds into the charger housing - no cord. Just pop the battery into it, flip the plug out and stick it in the wall. Read more Less
