A great Camera for all up to Top Amateur

    By Steven  Oct 26, 2009

Pros: Optical Zoom, Low light & huge feature array. Easy to configure for anyone.

    Cons: None.

Used film SLRs for many years. Using supplementary lenses gives you 35mm equiv 28-800 use with 1/4 weight of your old SLR film gadget bags. Image quality is truly excellent. Macro and anti-shake built in too. This Camera can be used effectively from the out of the box "green square" point and shoot mode, to the most sophisticated spot meter/metered manual. All Program modes excellent. Not much to fault it, but then I haven't used it's successor yet . This is the earliest model with program flash shoe. Recommend you get an external flash too even though the internal flash capability is probably the best you will ever get from one internal to any camera! Use Lithium AAs they go on and on and on...

    My first Canon

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 12, 2009 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot S5 IS review helpful

Pros: Good single handed operation; swivel LCD; good feel; quality shots; 4 AA batteries provides versatility.

Cons: lens cap comes off too easily; continuous shooting too slow; slow to focus for next shot

I've had this camera for about 1 1/2 years now. I am not a professional photographer, but a serious amateur. While I would like to get a "real" DSLR, this camera does many of the same things with the same capability, but lighter, smaller, less expensive, and a few extras not available on the DSLRs, like the swivel LCD. I love it for many reasons. The viewer is lacking compared to a DSLR. I take this camera with me everywhere I go and use it almost daily for a wide range of shot types. Even if I do get a "real" DSLR, I'll probably keep this one too. Was it worth the $$$. Yes, and I'm still learning things with it. Keep the manual handy for reference and new tricks to learn.

Next best thing to a DSLR

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 5, 2009

Pros: Some manual settings, easy to use, macro/super macro

Cons: Lens cap, doesn't like rechargable batteries, manual focus needs improve

This is a nice, lite camera - good for taking anywhere. It has some manual features, but is no DSLR. Though, it's the best digital camera I have had.

    Love it!

    By Marni  Mar 24, 2009

Pros: Cripness of photos, versatility of camera, shutter speed etc

Cons: None - except for not being a DSLR (but that's my issue not the cameras!)

I love this camera. It took me ages to finally pick which one I was going to buy coming from a compact and I am soo pleased with the results from the powershot. I truly cannot find a con with it and have experimented with all modes. (could not highlight the last two stars on overall rating use for some reason!)

Stop kicking the lens cover ; -)

By Clifford D  Mar 2, 2009 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot S5 IS review helpful

Pros: The lens cover has to be loose so as to pop off when the lens is extended so...

Cons: With the lens adapter and even more the rubber lens hood compromises the flash

Get the filter / lens adapter and put on a UV filter to protect the lens. You can still use the lens cap if you wish and even add a rubber lens hood.

Easier to hold as noted elsewhere. I use the 52 mm not the 58 mm since filters not extra lenses are my objective and it is a little smaller.

As to quality of picture. My pileated woodpecker may be a bit fuzzed, but few other cameras could have taken the shot, hand held, through a window, at 12x zoom. And my musicians in a dark bar have noise in the picture at high ISO but my SLR would have been pushed to get the shot at all even at 1600 ISO and I would have needed a tripod. Maybe noise depicts the reality of a dark, no longer smoky in PA, bar better than a perfect shot?
