The successor to the enormously popular PowerShot S400 Digital ELPH camera, this new four-megapixel model offers all of the advantages of its distinguished predecessor as well as the array of above-mentioned Direct Print/ Print/Share and Direct Transfer features. Among the PowerShot S410 Digital ELPH camera other key attributes are its peak resolution of 2272 x 1704 pixels, a 3x (36-108mm equivalent) all glass, seven-element, Canon zoom lens with a wide AF range from 2 inches (in macro mode) to infinity. The PowerShot S410 Digital ELPH camera also records movies with sound at 15 frames per second for clips of up to three-minutes each at 320 x 240 or 160 x 120 resolution.

The PowerShot S410 Digital ELPH also features simple yet sophisticated shooting features such as Evaluative, Center-weighted or Spot metering for more precise exposure control; shutter speeds ranging from 15 seconds to a fast 1/2000 of a second; a user adjustable exposure compensation feature that allows for and increase or decrease of up to two stops in gradual 1/3 increments, and a Custom White Balance option that is read off of a white or known neutral object. Like the new PowerShot S500 model, the S410 camera utilized Compact Flash type 1 media and features a 10x zoom capability on playback using the camera's 1.5 inch, 118,000 pixel LCD monitor.

Whoops, no battery power left !

    Pros: Excellent images, rugged

Cons: No current battery level indicator

I spent a lot of time online researching compact digital cameras and narrowed my choice down to the Nikon Coolpix 3700 and the Canon S410. I went with the Canon because the reviews consistently said the image quality was excellent (not all reviews o...f the Nikon said images "excellent" or "outstanding") and because the reviews seemed to indicate the Canon s410 was more rugged/durable than the Nikon.I have found that the camera images are indeed excellent and it does indeed seem rugged BUT I do regret getting it as it has one MAJOR flaw:I have been using digital cameras for over 10 years and every single one of them had an indicator which told the user how much power was left in the battery. I was surprised to find out that this newer Canon model does not have such a feature. It does give you a warning when the battery is low BUT that happens when there is just about enough power to take 4 more pictures (even conserving power by not using the LCD). I found this out on a long day of sightseeing, early in the day, and missed out on many many great shots because the low battery warning came on way too late. When I talked to Canon about it they said that yes, that is the only battery indicator provided. So I am left with the option of recharging the battery just to make sure I have a good charge - maybe when it does not need it (note: Canon recommends recharging ONLY when the battery is low as there is a limit to how many times you can charge the battery).... or I can count how many photos I took since the last charge. As battery power is a critical factor the useful functioning of digital cameras, I am very disappointed that Canon did not see fit to provide a better power level indicator for this camera AND also sorry that none of the professional and owner reviews ever mentioned this limitation to warn potential buyers. Canon PowerShot S410

The Powershot S410 is perfect for anyone who wants or needs a very portable and extremely durable camera. Canon started the whole mini-camera revolution many years ago and they just keep getting better and better. It's a great choice for vacationers as you can just toss it in your luggage without worrying about it getting damaged. If you're going to the tropics you might want to consider purchasing the underwater case, it's rated for 130 feet depths. The S410 is a great addition to Canon's Digital ELPH line. Read more
