Pros: This camera is the best we found...the most BANG for the BUCK.Everything is self explanitory and simple.
Cons: Didn't Find Any
Purchased two cameras and returned them until we came across this one. It feels secure in your hands (unlike some that felt like a toy). This camera is the best we found. Each of the settings are self explanitory on the viewer...and overall this camera is simple...simple...simple.
The screen is large and easily turned for easy viewing. But most importantly, after seeing the quaility of the photos, we realized that if you're not enlarging and printing oversized photos the 6 pxls are more than enough for the average user. It's size is convenient and doesn't feel like a bulky oversized camera. It has the convenience of an instant camera with the results of a professional.Even with motion, the photos are clean and crisp. We upgraded to a 2gig memory card which will allow us to take videos and photos and never worry about running out of memory. So...we must say...as fussy as we were and with the two prior mistakes we made, we are pleased to say that the end result and purchase of this Cannon was a WISE DECISION. We highly recommend this camera for on the go fun!
Pros: Many different options, superb color quality, easy to use
Cons: No plug in power adapter, takes 4 AAA batteries
I upgraded to a canon from a sony cybershot and i must say i was blown away. Originally I sought the Canon because of the great reviews i've heard on color quality. This camera is way too advanced for me and i don't use half the features but it is well worth it. The only thing i don't like is that it does not come with a plug in power cord and regular batteries run out really fast, so you have to buy rechargeable ones. Other than that the picture quality is great and i wouldn't trade it for another brand of a higher pixel count.
Pros: This is a great camera. It takes great outdoor pictures and good indoor pictures. The IS really work on zoom. I have 3 Nikon. S3 makes much better pitures in every way. Battery life is long. You can turn the lcd to any angle you want to take the picture.
Cons: Buttons & body don't have solid feel as my Nikon. LCD too dim on daylight.
I got my the 1st batch of S3 on May 06' Wow, S3 is like a mini DSLR with IS. I am a Nikon guy. I had Nikon N50(sold), N60(sold) and Coolpix 3100(still have it). But my S3 blow them away with much better picture quality. Only concern is built qual...ity, buttons feel loose. When I was holding my N60, I felt like I was holding a stone. I don't have the same feeling when I hold my S3. But not a big deal.
Pros: Extremely easy to use
Cons: Zoom gets blurry and loses focus
over all its a good camera, the zoom is just very annoying..
and sometimes the flash could be a little overwhelming ..
Pros: Quality Pics, Great Zoom, Economical batteries & Memory Card
Cons: Lens cap attachment, Complex controls and menus
Wow, going from the Powershot A620 to the Powershot S3 IS is like going from a kiddie cart to a Corvette.
Started using Nov.2006 - carry it almost every day. Fast startup, produces great action and stills as well as surprisingly high quality video. (Some Windows users complain about the QT .mov format, but there are work arounds.)
Zoom is excellent, to get the same focal length with a Digital SLR would take a lens two feet long and weighing ten pounds.
The "modes" work as they should (portrait, landscape, panorama, etc, etc). The trade-off is that menus and controls take time to learn and that makes hurry-up shots "missed it!" category sometimes.
The attached lens cap: cord too short - the cap keeps tapping against the camera and can be heard on sound tracks of the videos. Also: the attachment cord has a hard plastic "clincher" which can scratch the lens if the lens cap is put on in a hurry. (That's a $150 replacement for lens.)
The S3-IS is not a shirt pocket camera. It needs a belt-carry case or you carry with provided neck strap. But having a case - provides space for spare batteries and memory cards. Having those spares, I have shot "all day" - taken 600 photos and a half hour of video on some occasions.
The S3-IS has been replaced by newer versions, but this "family" is outstanding for photo and even amateur video enthusiasts. I've just taken my 14,000th shot: still going and hope to continue for years.
Pros: Overall it's a great camera! One of the cool things that worths mentioning is the ability to turn the LCD to different angles while taking a picture.
Cons: Poor quality at nights, it gets too grainy with ISO 400 and 800. Also you can not take RAW pictures which is a pitty!
My motivator and first camera ever! Though I don't really use it anymore as I have bunch of new cameras now!
Pros: Overall versatility, 12x zoom, rotating LCD, image quality in general
Cons: Sometimes fringing and contrast in bright light, dim graininess, no remote ability
I'm not a professional photographer, but I do like taking pictures...of everything in all settings. I would have gotten an SLR camera if I hadn't wanted a compact little camera that could also take video. The 12x optical zoom is a definite plus, as is the super macro ability. Basically, I wanted to take video, take bird photos (zoom), and see details on insects even if I wasn't sure I could get close enough without scaring them off. And I wanted it to be point-and-click, simple to use.
When comparing cameras in detailed online reviews, the Canon PowerShot G7 seemed to be the nearest competitor for what I wanted. The S3 IS won out marginally on zoom and a few examples of photos I saw. The price difference sealed it for me.
So far, I am very pleased with the camera. The only problems I have with it are no remote capabilities, occasional fringing, and occasional difficulty focusing in auto. In certain lighting (very dim or very bright) there are sometimes graininess issues and unnatural contrast. For someone more advanced in photography techniques, this may be easy to remedy. But then, chances are those people will opt for high-end SLR cameras for more professional shots.
The camera is lightweight but sturdy. I did accidentally drop it once in a paved driveway, and I was very pleased and impressed that it still performed well, the only apparent damage was to the lens cap loop.
For the average user like me or a professional who just wants a fun little all-around camera to take anywhere, I highly recommend it...at least until the next few generations of cameras come out.
Pros: Fast zoom, fast focus, great color, features galore.
Cons: Same old complaints-memory card with batteries, noise, small screen, lens cap falls off easily.
I have a Pentax K100D with extra lenses and all that wonderful stuff. It takes wonderful pictures when I feel like wagging all that around, which here lately is not very often. I have been looking and researching for months trying to find something smaller to take everywhere. I almost gave myself a migraine from all the looking. I wanted the Olympus SP 570 UZ but it is nowhere to be found in my area, so it came down to the Olympus SP 560 UZ and the S5 IS. I picked the Olympus first but took it back the next day. The zoom was so slow and write time was pathetic. I am very impressed with the S5 so far. I took a picture of an airplane which I zoomed in pretty close and it came out perfect. Of course the ultimate test will be low light but my Pentax didn't do all that great with that either. The quality of this camera is great and if you are not a professional photographer that can afford thousands of dollars in equipment, then you might really like this camera. As for me, I think I have finally found the One!
Pros: the swivle screen is great,
Cons: after 2 years of having it you must get it serviced you will adventuraly get a lens error but all it needs is a senor cleaning or dust removal
canon s3is was my first "simi profesional camera" i loved it, worked as a great inbetweener from a point and shoot camera (purse camera is what i call them) to the slr cameras. if your just a familyperson wanting a good camera this might be too big for you unless you like that "big look" but if your trying to become a photographer this is a great step to work up to a slr!
