    Image stabilizer really works!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 18, 2005 | 199 out of 202 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

Pros: size, weight, IS, uses AA rechargeable batteries, great zoom

Cons: needs adapter for wide-angle lens (optional), focus slightly off

I have several digital cameras including the Canon Digital Rebel with several different lenses. I felt I needed a smaller, lighter-weight camera that 'did it all' instead of carrying the Rebel with several different lenses when walking around.... I had read the reviews on this camera and most were excellent. Even the camera stores raved about this camera so I decided to buy it. I don't like the electronic viewfinder and the LCD screen doesn't work too well in bright sunlight but the picture quality is really outstanding. I went to the Santa Barbara zoo and took photos of animals using the full telephoto range (equivalent of about 400 or more mm) and used the image stabilization. The shots were absolutely gorgeous even blown up 3 times. The detail on the fur, eyes, etc. was incredible! On the other hand, I tried to focus on a bird's head while still including some of the surrounding background. The photo had the head slightly blurred while the background grass was sharp and clear. I don't know if it was my fault or the fault of the camera focusing slightly incorrectly. I did NOT use spot focusing which may have produced a better shot. I used one of the evaluative metering systems instead. The camera was lightweight and easy to carry around compared to my Rebel. I tried out the macro capability while shooting pics of the lion who just luckily was snoozing right next to the glass of the cage. I was just amazed at how sharp and clear the photo was of his face! I tried to take shots of the frogs, snakes, centipede, etc. but they were in darkened cages with dirty glass and my shots showed the dirty glass clearly while the critters were slightly out of focus. Again, it may have been something I could have improved upon with different settings. Shots taken with an ISO of 400 showed up with a visible graininess but shots taken using ISO 50 or 100 were so detailed and sharp. This has been a complaint of this camera. I did purchase the lens adapter and wide-angle lens (at additional cost) but have not used it yet so can't comment on it. I wish Canon would have made this camera so it didn't need such a large adapter ring to accomodate filters. I like to keep a UV filter on my lens at all times to protect it from scratches and the only way to do that on this camera is by attaching it to the end of the adapter which adds additional length to the front of the camera. Overall, I really love this camera and it takes wonderful pictures. I'm sure it will be the one I grab for times when I'm walking around and want a good zoom range. The image stabilizer is a fantastic addition and IT REALLY WORKS even when the lens is fully extended. There is no way I would have been able to use a telephoto lens at anything above 200 handheld and gotten the sharpness and details this camera produced. Read more Less

    Cannon S2 IS

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 9, 2005 | 97 out of 101 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

    Pros: Ease of use

    Cons: Cost

Simply awesome. Very quick to zoom and focus. The zoom is very steady. Lots of bells and whistles for someone that wants more, however using the camera in the Auto mode is simple. If you want decent MP, long optical zoom, and decent battery life, the...n this camera is for you. I shopped and tried several, and this is the only camera that had no shortcomings. Cost is a constraint if you have a limited budget. Read more Less

    Best canon yet for price

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 3, 2005 | 45 out of 45 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

Pros: super fast super zoom, lots of features

Cons: optional wide angle lens not included, not that cheap

I have been a digital camera fan for years now, i have had many different camera's, But canon makes the best digital camera's by far. My latest is the canon s2is, Although bigger than most canon digital camera's this camera is awsom simpl...y put if your not to worried about size. Super fast zoom, All the best features you can ask from a camera at this price. Great video features, love that it can zoom while taking video. Camera has stereo sound WOW, you can fully customize your settings threw custom and the manual modes on the camera. Or you can just leave it in auto and let the camera do all the work. Although i think this is the best investment toward a camera, It did not come cheap, So in conclusion if you want a camera with all the bells and whistles and the closest thing to a digital SLR the canon s2is is the camera for you. Very Nice Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 14, 2006 | 37 out of 38 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

Pros: Uses AA bateries, Takes beautiful pictures

Cons: Not recommended for a first time buyer or novice, of which I am both

I love this camera. I've taken some really cool sunset shots and some awesome pictures of flowers up close with the super macro mode. At first I thought there was something wrong with my camera because my pictures would be rotated or the image wo...uldn't display on the LCD screen but I finally read most of the huge manual and found out they were just features. I would not recommend this for a novice but if you want the best camera money can buy and all the bells and whistles (half of which I don't know how to use and probably never will) buy it. Cannon S2

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 14, 2005 | 28 out of 30 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

Pros: Many excellent features; fantastic zoom

Cons: Expensive; a little bulky for everyday use

I bought this camera the week it came out. I had a Cannon S1 and had lost it. This is my fourth Cannon camera and I am quite satisfied with the features. My primary purpose in purchasing this camera was the optical zoom lens. I consider a digit SLR,... but they made the S2 look cheap. The zoom is great, taking pictures from significant distances that look as if you were standing next to the object. The non-automatic settings were easy to figure out and the movie setting has been great. Read more Less

    Canon S2 IS

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 12, 2005 | 16 out of 18 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

    Pros: 12X Zoom, Sharp Pictures

Cons: A little difficult to properly focus at full Zoom.

The camera takes great pix without a lot of technical knowledge on my part. Had a pro photographer comment positively on the sharpness of my pictures. Battery life seems to be longer than my older Canon A40. Regarding focus at full zoom. You can'...;t just zoom out at full speed & then try to focus. You have to focus at a lower zoom setting then let the camera correct the focus as you slowly zoom in on your subject. I haven't tried the manual focus but expect it would work just as well. Love this Camera!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 3, 2005 | 12 out of 13 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

    Pros: This Camera is Pro

    Cons: N/A

Last Camera I'll ever buy(as my wife chuckles in the back ground)..OK, I'm a camera nut and nuts about this camera.Excellent quality pic taking.Built in short video cam/mic etc... with feature upon feature(see the specs, you'll be impresse...d).Took awhile to learn all it's functions(read the manual guys and gals)but you owe it to yourself to invest in a good quality camera like this one. From taking pics of family, sports, nature, low light settings, optical and digital zoom w/ image stabilizer etc... for the money,...it's the Hummer H2 of cameras in my opinion. Downfalls?...could use alittle more battery life...but then again,I'm constantly using it! Read more Less

Pros: awesome zoom and great pictures

    Cons: lens cap/focus

I bought my s2 is a week ago and love it! It's a little irrating to watch the lens cap fall off occasionally and sometimes the autofocus can be a little off. The camera is easy to use and definitely takes great pictures. The movie mode is absolut...ely awesome with good sound..but try not to use the zoom because you can hear it when you reply the movie mode. Read more Less

    Canon PowerShot S21S Digital Camera

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 14, 2005 | 9 out of 13 found this Canon PowerShot S2 IS review helpful

Pros: Loved all the special features

Cons: Cost more but worth it!

This was our first digital camera, and although it cost more, its worth every penny. My husband loves all the bells and whistles on it, and I use it with the Auto Focus, and we both love the camera. Very easy to use.
