    Pros: Control options, IS, Zoom range, AA power, SDHC

    Cons: long shutter lag, slow burst mode

    This is a "forced" upgrade from the A620. My pre-digital experience was an Olympus SLR system (OM2, OM4). I made the decision to postpone going to DSLR for now because enjoy the ability to actually carry the camera more often than I did the... SLR system, 4 lenses and flash, resulting in greatly increased output to pick from. The improvements over the A620 are all welcome, but especially: The Image stabilization and Safe digital Zoom are very useful and transparent to use. The LCD size increase from 2 to 2.5 is very noticeable. The noise seems to have improved with the Digic III processor, but is still noticeable above ISO 200 but this is to be expected of a 1/1.7 sensor. Many Pluses of the 650IS: • As little or as much control as you like from full Auto "PHD" (push here dummy) camera to full manual settings • Ability to save "Custom" settings • Reasonably good grip / ergonomics, easy the use one-handed • Large 2.5" swivel LCD • Image stabilization • 6x optical Zoom ratio • Good "Around the shutter" Zoom control location • Great macro performance for a compact camera • AA battery power and SDHC storage provide the most affordable options Few Minuses: • Some may find it at the upper limit in size & weight for a compact camera and neckstrap capability would offset the above • Noticeably slower continuous shooting than the A620, even at smaller MP settings • More than 1 "Custom" setting would be nice • Relocating the SD slot with the batteries is not really an improvement… • Viewfinder tiny and way off reality but I suppose coming from film SLR it will take a full size DSLR to satisfy older photographers like me Overall level of satisfaction for the price is still great. I had to order the A650IS as soon as it became available and experienced the "light leak" defect. It was corrected as promptly and conveniently by Canon. Great customer service there. Read more Less

    Pros: IS, friendly menu, LCD screen, opitical zoom, size

    Cons: aberations in macro mode, color range, image quality

    I had a Coolpix 5000 and it had its problems, but the image quality in macro was superior to the A650 IS despite the A650 IS having more than twice the megapixels. I shoot mostly plants, insects, trees and garden subjects. I use the macro setting 65%... of the time. I bought this as soon as it was released and returned the first camera because the aberrations (a square of horizontal lines in center of the image) were so bad. This showed up even in 4x6 prints. The replacement was a lot better, but this problem still shows up occasionally. Violet and red-violet colors seem impossible to capture accurately, even with custom white balance. It is easy to work with. A comfortable size to keep in my pocket when I use it for field work. It grips well. The buttons and programing are good, but I wish there was a technical explanation of the iconic program settings. Battery life is excellent, but I dont use flash. I like the flip-out LCD screen, for framing up macros of flowers without getting too bent out of shape. If is was a lot less expensive the image quality would be acceptable. I don't hate it enough to return it again, but I wouldn't recommend it with out pre-testing to see if it meet your needs and is free of defects. Read more Less

    Pros: Flip-out LCD Monitor, IS,

    Cons: shutter lag, but not a major problem

    This camera is so easy to use. The pictures have all come out great and true to color! I love the "grip" of the camera, it feels steady in my hand and the buttons are easily accessible. The flip-out LCD monitor was a big plus, I love this f...eature! You don't have to worry about the monitor getting scratched, just flip it around and close it. I have no complaints, and am very happy with this purchase. Read more Less

    Pros: Great clarity, detail in pictures

    Cons: SD mem card hard to access;need to open battery compartment

    This camera is an upgrade from an old workhorse A80 PowerShot I got exactly four years ago. I spent $400 for the A80 and got 4 megapixels. The new A650 has 12.1 megapixels, and its best price is significantly less that $400. The camera feels good in ...your hands, controls are very readily apparent for me, an old Canon PowerShot user. Might need a bit of study for a novice, but the learning curve isn't that steep. I got a 2 Gigabyte high speed SD card (Canon gives you 32MB card) and picture saving is rapid, colors and images are clear and true, and it is truly a GREAT upgrade from the Canon A80.     Pros: Print Quality even in the lowest lighting condition, so many shooting features and attractive casing

    Cons: The material used in this camera is somehow heavy in a long span of holding it especially you are trying yourself without using a tripod.

    I am gadget-freak person! when i see-one i know-one that a certain is a full-packed and a value-for-money. When I saw this baby, it already grabbed my attention and also my wife's. At first, we sort of in a stage of hesitation because of its pric...e tag, but when the camera demonstrated to us how to use the camera and explained to us its specification by the sales representative in a store of SONY in Gateway Mall, we already decided to purchase it at once or else we're going to kiss our butt in dismay if we are not going to get it! now, everywhere i go, i always bring with me my baby - the CANON POWERSHOT A650 IS.     I upgraded from a 4 year old A 80 that I liked very much. Wanted a larger and brighter flip out LCD, view finder, greater zoom power. Got more pixels (12) than I need but am happy with the variety of pictures taken in the first week of ownership. Lik...e the feel of the camera; reminds me more of my old Olympus OM 1.
