The PowerShot A640 bursts with creative options. Use its 10.0 Megapixels to shoot poster size prints with fine detail. Discover new possibilities with the vari-angle LCD and optional accessories.

Print high quality poster size images with all the incredible detail of 10.0 Megapixels. Crop and trim to create new compositions while keeping your photos extra large and razor sharp.

A 4x optical zoom lens gives you the flexibility to frame shots up close or at a distance without sacrificing quality.

The large 2.5" Vari-angle LCD twists in all directions - ideal for self-portraits and creative shots at unusual angles. Night Display mode aids visibility in low light while a selectable Grid Line display helps with composition. A useful 3: 2 ratio overlay indicates the printable area for standard photo prints.

Canon's DIGIC II image processor manages all camera functions and processes images at high speed for excellent responsiveness and extended battery life. iSAPS is a built-in assistant that uses scene information to optimize camera settings before the shot is taken.

Rely on 9-point AiAF to keep even off-center subjects sharply in focus or use FlexiZone AF/AE to manually select a focus point.

21 shooting modes include a full creative zone for manual control and 10 Special Scene modes for tricky lighting conditions including Snow, Beach and Underwater. My Colors allows color effects to be applied to images and movies.

A high-speed ISO 800 setting allows you to shoot correctly exposed images in low light conditions without using a flash. ISO 800 also enables shooting at higher shutter speeds reducing the risk of image blur.

Safety Zoom offers extra zoom magnification without affecting image quality. Use the Digital Tele-Converter for extra reach on every shot - just like adding a teleconverter lens to the camera.

Focus as close as 1cm and capture all the intricate detail of tiny subjects.

Shoot extra long 30fps VGA quality movies with full audio. View them on the camera's LCD screen or connect to a TV or PC for full screen playback.

Excellent field camera for advanced photographer

Pros: Loaded with MANUAL features, swivel LCD

Cons: Case is a little cheap, HATE the card in batter compartment

I am a pro, I shoot with SLR Digitals (1DS MkII and MkIIN, 30D) but I was looking for a take-along camera that I could bring with me everywhere and not be so conspicuous. Unfortunately, that meant that most snapshot cameras (i.e. elph, etc) had all a...uto settings and little or no control over the creative elements of photography. In a nutshell - use a snapshot camera and every shot will look like a snapshot - washed out, overexposed, etc etc. I tried the A640 and was VERY pleasantly surprised. The image out of the camera is superb for a point and shoot, as is the color saturation (with some tweaking of the white balance). Performance at higher ISO is OK. Overall I give this camera a very high rating for its manual controls, flexibility, and overall image quality. The Swivel LCD is indespensible when out in the field working in tight spots or on shots that require you to be discreet, that too is one of the best features of this camera. As someone who earns a living making pictures, I have had some very nice (production quality) shots come off the A640. This is a nice little package with good performance and a fantastic price. Complaints: None other than the Mem Card located in the battery compartment. Tips: Use either 2200 mAh NiMh rechargeables or better yet - Lithium disposable batteries and you will never complain about enough power or low battery life again. Standard Alkaline batteries are PATHETIC as power sources for electronics. Nuf Said.. Read more Less

Pros: solid feel, great photos, easy to use

Cons: comes with 32mb memory card

The Cannon a640 is a bit bigger than most other cameras, but when you take into account all the features squeezed into it the size more then justifies its self and also makes it very easy to use even one handed. You can use this camera straight away ...and then when you have time you can make the most of its numerous advance features. The top quality of photo is more than most people need and even the video is passable for a half decent camcorder. If you have the money and you want great photos then this is the camera for you, it even comes with settings for just about every situation, but even if you hasn’t got one you need then you can set it up manually. The software on it is powerful but simple and the soft for a PC is simple and efficient. You can also buy extra leans for this camera is required. Dislikes – nothing about the camera, although some of the advance feature weren’t obvious to use, I thought it only coming with 32mb memory card was bad, 32mb isn’t much space at all and would only hold 16 large photos. It also come with recharge point, but not the batteries or charger. Read more Less

    Canon PowerShot A640

The Canon PowerShot A640 couples a ten megapixel CCD imager sensor, with a 4x optical zoom lens that offers a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 35 - 140mm - a moderate wide angle to a somewhat more generous telephoto than you'll find on most compact cameras. Maximum apertures vary from f/2.8 to f/4.1 across the zoom range. The A640's sensor yields an ISO range equivalent to 80 to 800, while shutter speeds from 1/2500 to 15 seconds are possible.Designed with ease of use in mind, the Canon A640 offers both a range of features that make it approachable to beginners, as well as the ability to exert more control over the photographic process. For the former category of users, there's a fully automatic mode, and a generous selection of thirteen scene modes. For the latter, you'll find manual and aperture / shutter priority exposures possible, plus preset or manual white balance, and three metering modes. A VGA-or-below movie mode captures videos at a maximum of 30 frames per second, for up t... Read more

    Canon powershot A640

Last year we said "Canon has struck gold" with the A620 and A610, and this year they have done it yet again. These models continue to be some of our favorites in this class, offering style, versatility, excellent image quality, speedy performance, and a wealth of exposure modes, all in a rugged metal/plastic shell. With an MSRP of just US$399, I feel the Canon PowerShot A640 offers an outstanding value for such a capable 10-megapixel model. And with so much resolution, you can create poster prints without a problem. If you loved this model, and can settle for only 8-megapixels of resolution and no remote capture feature, check out the A630, which can be acquired for about $100 less. Read more
