Excellent field camera for advanced photographer

By adventurous  Mar 13, 2007 | 74 out of 75 found this Canon PowerShot A640 review helpful

Pros: Loaded with MANUAL features, swivel LCD

Cons: Case is a little cheap, HATE the card in batter compartment

I am a pro, I shoot with SLR Digitals (1DS MkII and MkIIN, 30D) but I was looking for a take-along camera that I could bring with me everywhere and not be so conspicuous. Unfortunately, that meant that most snapshot cameras (i.e. elph, etc) had all a...uto settings and little or no control over the creative elements of photography. In a nutshell - use a snapshot camera and every shot will look like a snapshot - washed out, overexposed, etc etc. I tried the A640 and was VERY pleasantly surprised. The image out of the camera is superb for a point and shoot, as is the color saturation (with some tweaking of the white balance). Performance at higher ISO is OK. Overall I give this camera a very high rating for its manual controls, flexibility, and overall image quality. The Swivel LCD is indespensible when out in the field working in tight spots or on shots that require you to be discreet, that too is one of the best features of this camera. As someone who earns a living making pictures, I have had some very nice (production quality) shots come off the A640. This is a nice little package with good performance and a fantastic price. Complaints: None other than the Mem Card located in the battery compartment. Tips: Use either 2200 mAh NiMh rechargeables or better yet - Lithium disposable batteries and you will never complain about enough power or low battery life again. Standard Alkaline batteries are PATHETIC as power sources for electronics. Nuf Said.. Read more Less

Pros: solid feel, great photos, easy to use

Cons: comes with 32mb memory card

The Cannon a640 is a bit bigger than most other cameras, but when you take into account all the features squeezed into it the size more then justifies its self and also makes it very easy to use even one handed. You can use this camera straight away ...and then when you have time you can make the most of its numerous advance features. The top quality of photo is more than most people need and even the video is passable for a half decent camcorder. If you have the money and you want great photos then this is the camera for you, it even comes with settings for just about every situation, but even if you hasn’t got one you need then you can set it up manually. The software on it is powerful but simple and the soft for a PC is simple and efficient. You can also buy extra leans for this camera is required. Dislikes – nothing about the camera, although some of the advance feature weren’t obvious to use, I thought it only coming with 32mb memory card was bad, 32mb isn’t much space at all and would only hold 16 large photos. It also come with recharge point, but not the batteries or charger. Read more Less

    Good, Solid Camera

By ryanp  Jan 14, 2007 | 19 out of 20 found this Canon PowerShot A640 review helpful

Pros: 10mp. Flip-out LCD. Wonderful looks

Cons: Poor images in low light.

A day after purchasing the A640, I discovered that this camera is the best camera that I've had. 10mp, 5mp higher than my Canon A530, four higher than my A540. The camera, overall, looks amazing, with its dark, dark blue, nearly black surface. I...t's weight is perfect, and every button is in reach. With the LCD being 2.5 iches, and with the vari-angle ability, getting every shot is, well a snap. As with everything that is "perfect", they suffer some flaws: it's almost unbareable night shots. The only way to get a night scene, you have to bump up the ISO, and well, this is where it stumbles. There's more noise than a 17 year old girl on a cell phone at an AC-DC concert. Also, I've found out that the wrist strap placement is not placed well, what with all the opening and closing of the USB connection port. With everything that the A640 has to offer, I've found out that this is a very capable camera, and the pros outway the cons. Read more Less

Initially I was taking photos of normal city life etc..but the day I took the photo of New Zealand's scenic beauty, I thought this camera truly captured that beauty...Wonderful camera..

Pros: high picture quality, large display, ease of use

Cons: zoom range could be larger, no image stabilization, no information in viewfinder, no RAW setting, barrel distortion on wide angle and closeups

I teach photography in a large high school and have been taking pictures for over 40 years. I have also taught in colleges and had my own photo business. I wanted a small, walking around camera and after seeing the quality that one of my students obt...ained from this camera, as well as reading online reviews, I bought it. Overall, I am very pleased, but there are a few things that you should be aware of. To get the features that I mention as cons, you will have to spend more, if you can get them at all. For instance, if I wanted to spend $200 more, I could have bought the G7 and had image stabilization. I am sure that may have made me happier, but this purchase was also dictated by price. I paid $267, which I consider very reasonable and for that price it was a no brainer. You can easily enlarge photos to 11X14 and probably 16X20. However, my printer only prints to 13X19 and I leave a 1 inch border. At 11X14, the quality is outstanding. I also like the accuracy of the auto focus system. I can count on pictures being sharp as long as I listen for the audible beep. I have done numberous closeups with it held over my head or down at my feet. They are almost always tack sharp. A con that I mention is barrel distortion. It seems that almost all of the small cameras and zoom lenses on DSLR's produce it. I wish it were not so. Unless you buy a DSLR and get a lens made for close up photographs, like the 105mm Micro Nikkor, you will have it. Still, I wish it was not there. The zoom range for this camera is adequate, but modest. I wish it went out further. However, if you want to do closeups, this thing will get you in to about a half inch. All in all, I find this camera to be a modern marvel. The ten megapixels rival medium format film camera quality and exposure and color accuracy is right on the button. Read more Less

A great camera for the money, but...

Pros: large swivel 2.5 inch LCD, 10Mpl sensor, excellent battery life

Cons: No RAW files or bracketing

I've been using this camera for a couple of months. It has very nice resolution and excellent colour range due to the Digic II processor. The viewfinder is large and great with its ability to swivel. Not very fussy on the Zoom Browser software. I... do wish that a camera of this quality had RAW file capability, but it doesn't. I guess Canon want you to move to the G7 for that feature. All in all, if you want to make large prints, or simply want to do more cropping to make your image like it was taken with a 35mm camera, then this is great for the value. Read more Less

    Best Buy

By klash  Mar 29, 2007 | 3 out of 3 found this Canon PowerShot A640 review helpful

Pros: Stunning Picture Quality with 10.0MP, Good for Pros and Best for Beginners with lots of features, LCD is bigger and rotation

Cons: 32MB card, Images not clear at Night

I recently got myself a Canon Powershot A640 and i was stunned to see its features and picture clearity, 10 megapixel is enough to take big images for prints. And ISO upto 800 is good but makes some noise, LCD is awesome and can shoot with tilting it... when you want to take pictures from from top also and if you want to take your own pic, its better :), over all Canon is best as i am Canon Fan and had Canon powershot A530 and Canon Handcam too, this adds gold to my canon collection, Canon Rocks. Best Buy for everyone in the move. Read more Less

    "Excellent all-around camera - 100% RECOMMENDED!!"

By WoodyM  Jul 4, 2007 | 1 out of 1 found this Canon PowerShot A640 review helpful

Pros: Great, sleek color, lots of detail, fast performance,

    Cons: No image stabilization

I upgraded from a 2-year-old Sony camera, and am very impressed with the A640. I did a fair amount of research, and many other cameras in this category had performance issues, such as shutter lag and slow processing or flash recharge time. The ima...ge quality of the pictures is excellent. Although many articles tell you that anything over 5 megapixels is superfluous, the 10 megapixels are quite handy if you want to crop a shot -- they still look perfect even if you are only using a portion of the photo. The camera even handles shadows well, with virtually no noise and good detail. Color is very good. The only thing keeping the score from being a perfect 10 is that I wish the camera came with the Image Stabilization that the A710 has, because that would assist in low-light situations such as indoor photos without a flash. The ISO 400 and 800, like on most cameras, are very noisy. ISO 100 and 200 make many, but not all, low-light shots without a flash possible. In any event, we chose this one over the A710 because of the battery life and speed of performance (the A710 has only two AA batteries, which affect these things). The camera handles indoor flash shots quite well, and the flash intensity is adjustible if needed. In any event, the camera is very easy to use, both in fully automatic and manual modes. The screen tells you where it's focusing on each shot, which is quite useful. There is no shutter lag, and its movie feature is quite useful. If you get a big memory card, you can take a good deal of good quality video (8 minute limit is per clip, not per memory card). Very happy with this purchase... Read more Less
