The Camera That Turned Me Digital

By mystical child  Nov 29, 2006 | 57 out of 62 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

    Pros: quality, pricing, usefulness

Cons: with the camera body it's self i have found nothing

I was one of those photographers who didn't want to go digital, not because i feared the change but because of the quality of digital cameras.. the lag, the zoom, nothing really appealed to me on a professional level. When the DSLRs started comin...g out, i started to take more notice of the benefits of Digital Photography. But, it wasn't until the Rebel XT was released that i knew i wanted to change over. I had been using 35mm Rebels and the fact that the XT was the cousin to my other's was a big selling point as all my lenses work on the XT as well. I have used my XT in everything from weddings to just taking photos around the house for over a year now,and it has never let me down. When you use the XT along with Canon Photo printers and paper you can't go wrong, my photography business has expanded simply because of the ease of digital, and i couldn't have done it if not for the XT that finally convinced me to go for it i recommend this camera to whoever is serious about photography on any level the price is well worth the quality and the end result. i have found that using it has actually improved the quality of my photography and i know it will do the same for others. Pros: So much camera for the money / very clear and sharp LCD screen / overall features and high specs

Cons: lens kit (18-55mm) supplied gives slightly soft images / RAW editing software not the best, but at least it is supplied with the camera at no extra cost (unlike Nikon's) / simultaneous RAW and large jpegs only, no simulteneous RAW + thumbnails instead (hence takes up more memory on card when function used)

Quality of image superb, can support big blow ups. Possibility to shoot in RAW and edit raw files at no extra cost (software supplied). The continuous shooting mode is pretty good, the flash-use possibilities good too. Really, for a semi-pro camera (...I mean not full frame sensor), it boasts most of the features of a high end digital camera. I just wish the highest shutter speed went up to 1/8000th of a sec. Other than that, I was rather impressed by the possibilities offered by this model. Go into the menu and you'll see that it has been designed to suit the amateurs (even novices!), as well as the pros. If you can afford it, bypass the 18-55 kit lens and get something a bit better. If you are into landscape (or other wide angle use), bear in mind this is the 35mm equivalent of a 29-88mm zoom. I think it is a better option to opt for a 10-20mm instead (this will give you a 16-32mm equivalent in 35mm terms). On this 18-55mm lens, though, the minimum focussing distance is rather good and allow great close-ups at all focal lengths (if you're into the odd macro shot), so all is not lost... These pretty little cameras should be even a better deal on the second-hand market once the updated version comes out. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY!!! Read more Less

    Awesome DSLR for beginners

By M4LIC3  Jan 8, 2007 | 18 out of 18 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

Pros: Tons of creative features compared to point-and-shoot

Cons: LCD size, smaller CMOS sensor

This camera is an awesome choice for a beginning photographer. The CMOS sensor has low noise - compared to a CCD. A few things to be aware of: 1. The camera has been replaced by the 10 MP 400D (Rebel XTi) The XTi has a larger LCD, and obviously take...s higher-resolution photos. It also has a few changes in the overall layout of the controls. The price for the XTi with the kit lens should be around $800 (Newegg). The price for the XT with kit lens should be around $600 (also Newegg). 2. The kit lens that comes with the camera has it's limitations. While it is good for learning and everyday use, don't expect to get breathtaking zoom shots of wildlife with it. It is possible to buy the XT or XTi without a kit lens and save a few bucks (to put towards a higher-quality lens) But don't be talked into believing that the kit lens is garbage. It is a decent lens, just not exceptional. 3. Consider investing in a battery grip for this camera. Besides holding 2 batteries, it gives you the capability of using 6 AA batteries as well. It also adds a little weight to the camera to help stabilize it. The grip is also compatible with most tripods, and also adds the vertical grip for shooting ease. (2nd set of shutter button, wheel, and AF/zoom buttons. Just be aware that this grip costs alot of money if you buy direct from Canon - try Newegg for about $125.00. Overall, the camera is an excellent choice for those starting out in the photography. Read more Less

Pros: Very user Friendly, Light weight, Extremely Sharp Images, Price Is Right

    Cons: None at the moment

I like the feel and the ease of use of this camera. I do a lot of hiking, nature shooting and wildlife so the light weight of this camera is great for me. I like the crispness of the images that I get with this camera. This camera is truly the more ...bang for the buck. If you are looking at this camera don't hesitate to purchase it! You won't be sorry! Read more Less

    An Excellent Value

By Allison  Dec 22, 2006 | 11 out of 11 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

Pros: Image quality, availability of lenses and accs., price

Cons: Quality of the included "kit" lens

I didn't come to digital photography until I bought the Rebel XT last year, thinking I'd be giving up the image quality and creative control I've enjoyed from the 35mm's I've used for decades. With prices of digital SLR's comi...ng down and one of my old camera bodies failing, I took the plunge and love it. When shooting RAW or even high quality JPG, image quality is every bit as good as 35mm film and noticeably better when working in low light situations. Creative control is certainly greater, though it's a different art and set of skills than it is for film. This camera isn't professional grade, but you get 98+% of the way there for a tiny fraction of the price of truly high end cameras. The best thing I can say about the Rebel XT is that it's an outstanding value; very nearly pro-grade for an amatuer price. The included lens is a little weak, though. It's not bad, and I'm still glad to have it as a "walking around/no care" lens, but you should expect to upgrade. I dropped about $200 each on Canon's 75-300 and 28-105 zoom lenses. Again, you could spend more than $1k on Canon's high end "L" lenses, but for just a few hundred, you get an excellent step up in image quality. The 28-105 (important: the f3.5-4.5, NOT the f4.5-5.6) will offer noticable improvements over the kit lens. I'm loving this camera. Read more Less

Best choice for an average turning pro

By fork  Nov 2, 2006 | 13 out of 18 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

    Pros: price, usability, quality

    Cons: none for it's price

This camera is the best choice for those who want to become pros. Really good price for a camera that is ALMOST pro. You get to play with this toy and make photos like a pro. If you do this for a living it's not for you.

Pros: Takes the most beautiful pics and is easy to use

Cons: Can take a while to learn to use

I looked at this camera for almost 9 months before I purchased and I am glad that I did. The only thing is it takes a while to really learn how to use it but in the end, it is an awsome camera to have. I have never taken better picturesd than I have ...now with this camera! Read more Less

    Everything I expected and more...

By YoukilisIsaHomo  Dec 22, 2006 | 7 out of 7 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

Pros: Ease of use, image quality, Canon PC editing software

Cons: none really yet, as this is my first SLR, let alone DSLR, I need to learn more about the advanced settings, but that is on me not the camera

This is the first SLR camera I have owned as I was tired of the typical problems associated with point n shoot digitals. I waited until the XTi came out and got the XT on sale in November which is basically the same camera, best value for the money. ...It is very easy to use, very easy to switch between basic settings and the battery life is lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng. Buy the hi-speed CF memory card (I got the 2G on sale at Best Buy). I took some very low light indoor shots at Radio City Christmas Show WITHOUT the flash and they came out looking professional...very flexible camera. I have talked to pros that told me I bought EXACTLY the right camera for an aspiring photographer. Read more Less

    Love the Reble XT

By Lester  Dec 5, 2006 | 7 out of 8 found this Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Kit - Silver review helpful

    Pros: Price, Picture quality,light weight

    Cons: None

I have being using the xt for over a year and I have not found any problems with it so far. The camera takes very good quality pictures, which are so sharp you can blow them up and still have good quality pictures. the quality is so rich that if you ...take pictures with the highest quality setting and send them to someone via the internet it is going to take a long time to down load, I resort to the lowet setting for this purpose. The camera is really for anyone that want to take good pictures whether you are a pro or weekend photographer. Read more Less

    Pros: Picture quality is amazing

    Cons: Alot to learn

It's my first slr camera. I have to say my pictures are amazing in color and quality. It's a bit complicated but the instruction book is very detailed and helpful. I couldn't be happier with my camera.
