There is one hope for humanity: The World Union of Peace. They have a team of crack soldiers and a special technology, Motor Boots, which allow for maximum mobility in fighting the terrorists' robot hordes. The special team has already been assembled and contains some familiar faces to the world. They will do whatever it takes to put down this global threat, at any cost.

Cannon Spike features several characters that will be immediately familiar to those who have played previous games in Capcom's library. A total of seven characters are available, five of which are from other titles. These special fighters include Arthur from Ghost and Goblins, Cammy from Super Street Fighter II, Charlie from Street Fighter Alpha, B.B. Hood from Darkstalkers, and Mega Man.

All characters have at their disposal a regular rapid shot attack, a regular close attack, and more powerful versions of both these attacks. There is also a special attack that will render your character invincible for a time and allow him or her to do extensive damage.

Cannon Spike takes place over ten stages, where players are free to maneuver around, rotating a full 360 degrees, and lock onto given targets so they fire at them no matter which direction they are facing.

Once the main screen has been cleared of all enemies, the stage advances to a boss encounter. The boss characters are usually robotic in nature, as are most of the enemies you will face over the course of your mission.
