    LP Review

    By Mark  Aug 14, 2000

A truly classic band, much underrated. One of the best live bands i've ever seen. I saw them round the time of this LP & they were absolutely awesome. Eitzel was typically self depreciating, while he and the band made some of the most sublime music ...ever. A band well worth discovering, if you haven't already - I owe a great debt to the friend who lent me all his LPs & insisted that i go & see them live (cheers Stuart!). Read more Less

The best AMC record of them all

    By Jonathan  Feb 10, 2000

This record, the most difficult to find following the breakup in 1995, is American Music Club's best recording. It contains some of Mark Eitzel's best songwriting and was recorded during the period when he was probably most self-destructive. (Repeat...ed performances while fall-down drunk)Highlights include "Western Sky", "Pale Blue Shirt" and the AMC classic, "Last Harbor". If you're lucky, you can find old cassettes containing "Art of Love (Drunk mix)" where Eitzel and the crew recorded a jovial, belching rendition of the track.Great record and still curious why they've released every other album except this one. • All Music Guide

With the erratic California, Mark Eitzel's songwriting skills blossom into full maturity. From the pedal-steel inflected opener "Firefly" to the luminous "Western Sky," the best of his compositions reveal uncommon depth and emotional heft: "Somewhere" cuts with the savage humor of a master storyteller, while "Blue and Grey Shirt," a memoir of a friend's AIDS-related death, is simply devastating. A number of the cuts don't work at all -- the muddy "Bad Liquor" is an indecipherable rant, while "Laughing Stock" is by-the-numbers melodrama -- but those that do are nothing short of transcendent.

Biography

American Music Club

Although chosen for its deliberately nondescript qualities, in retrospect the name American Music Club was the perfect moniker for the lauded San Francisco-based band led by singer/songwriter Mark Eitzel: over the course of seven acclaimed albums, the group tied together the disparate strands of the American musical fabric -- rock, folk, country, punk, even lounge schma... Read more
