Pro Reviews: California Dreamin' [Collectables]

  • All Music Guide

The Collectables compilation California Dreamin' is a tentrack, budgetpriced set that contains some of the Mamas the Papas's bestloved tunes, including "Monday, Monday," "Go Where You Wanna Go," "Words of Love," and "California Dreamin'" plus six other minor hits. As budgetline collections go, California Dreamin' isn't bad, especially since it contains the original versions of these tracks, but better collections are available for not much more money. Pick up the 1998 remastered edition of Greatest Hits on MCA instead.

The leading California-based vocal group of the '60s, the Mamas the Papas epitomized the ethos of mid- to late-'60s pop culture: live free, play free, and love free. Their music, built around radiant harmonies and a solid electric-folk foundation, was gorgeous on its own terms, but a major part of its appeal lay in the easygoing Southern California lifestyle it endorse... Read more
